Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has introduced a Hurricane Buster Protection policy, entitling passengers to free booking alterations during inclement weather.

Announcing its latest range of low fares to the Caribbean, Latin America and destinations across the States, the Florida-based airline confirmed that its hurricane protection policy would remain in place.

“We are pleased to offer our customers the peace of mind and protection against stormy travel disruptions, especially since this is one of the busiest times of the year for travel,” said Barry Biffle, chief marketing officer at Spirit Airlines.

The busy summer travel period coincides with the hurricane season, which officially starts in June and lasts until November. Yet not all airlines operate a hurricane policy - every year, thousands of passengers face the inconvenience of unavoidable travel delays.

Complimentary rebooking can help alleviate the problem, but vacationers should ensure to secure travel insurance that pays out in the event of a hurricane. A good policy can also cover for baggage mishandling issues or delays caused by other factors.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting one of the worst hurricane seasons for years in 2007.
