Travel loyalty plans accrue 1.3bn members

The average US household belongs to 12 frequent flier plans and loyalty programs, according to a study by research firm Colloquy.

Results of the Loyalty Census 2007 indicate there are 1.3 billion active memberships in travel rewards programs across the States, a total which equates to more than four times the population of the country.

Though many travelers retain their membership with loyalty initiatives, Colloquy research reveals that “active participation” rates are in fact relatively low.

Only 39.5 per cent of members make use of their accounts, meaning that on average only 4.7 programs per household are being utilized on a regular basis.

The authors of the annual study predict that loyalty initiatives at hotels will attract more new users in the coming years, as frequent flier plans diminish in popularity, because accommodation deals “offer better value”.

Vacationers hoping to use their air miles, points or loyalty status to pay for a holiday must remember to cover themselves with a suitable travel insurance policy.
