If your airfare is subject to a cancellation penalty or restriction and most are, we recommend that you insure it. Many travel insurance policies require that the entire prepaid non-refundable trip cost be insured for certain benefits like pre-existing conditions, financial default, terrorism and cancel for any reason, which would include the cost of all arrangements including airfare. Remember, you will only be covered for the arrangements you insure.
