I am required by my tour operator to have “repatriation” insurance. What does this mean?

Repatriation means “to bring or send back to his or her country or land of citizenship.” Medical Repatriation and Repatriation of Remains are part of the Medical Evacaution benefit in travel insurance plans. If you became seriously injured or ill, and needed to return home via an air ambulance, that would be medical repatriation.  Repatriation of Remains refers to the return of your body in the event you pass away on your trip.
