If I get sick or injured and need to be evacuated, will my travel insurance policy pay?

Yes, most package policies provide benefits, but there are limitations. Almost all travel insurance policies state that they will transport you only as far as the “nearest adequate medical facility,” which is determined by the insurance carrier and assistance company, not you. Some policies say you must be critically ill or injured to qualify. Some allow the attending physician to decide whether you need to be evacuated, while others say their program directors will make the decision. A few policies provide for “hospital of choice” allowing you to choose medical evacuation to a hospital in a city within the USA or Canada other than your home city, but the maximum amount payable is limited to the cost of a medical evacuation to your home city.
