We have a family member who is currently ill and need to know if we can still purchase insurance?

Answer:

Most travel insurance companies exclude pre-existing conditions for both medical treatment and as a reason to cancel, interrupt or delay your trip. However, if you purchase the insurance within 10 - 21 days (depending on the insurance company) of the initial trip deposit, the exclusion for pre-existing conditions may be waived and you would be covered. Some insurance companies waive the exclusion for pre-existing conditions if a deposit has been made, but not the the final trip payment. Please refer to the policy certificates for additional details.

In the event your initial deposit was more than 21 days ago and your final trip payment has already been made, then pre-existing conditions would be excluded and the travel insurance would only cover "unforeseeable" events.
