Virgin Australia Financial Default – Provider Position Statements

With travel virtually grounded worldwide, travel suppliers are being impacted significantly by the coronavirus pandemic. On April 20, 2020, Virgin Australia has entered administration as a result of their financial issues. Squaremouth’s travel insurance providers share their official position statements explaining coverage for Virgin Australia’s financial default.

We request travel insurance position statements from all of our providers. If you do not see a position statement from your provider listed below, we recommend contacting them directly for information on your policy’s specific coverage.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Virgin Australia has reportedly entered into voluntary administration, similar to bankruptcy. This became a known event on 4.20.2020. Policies would need to have been purchased prior to that date for coverage to apply. In order to qualify for financial default coverage the policy would have to have been purchased within the early purchase time period. The default also must have occurred more than 14 days from their policy effective date.

As of April 20, 2020, Virgin Australia’s financial default is no longer considered an unforeseen event. In order for the Financial Default benefit to provide coverage, the default also must have occurred more than 14 days for the effective date of a traveler’s policy. For the Virgin Australia financial default, policies would need to have been purchased by April 4, 2020.Coverage is not available within any Tin Leg policies purchased after this date.

Tin Leg Standard, Luxury, and Adventure policies purchased prior to April 4 may provide Financial Default coverage related to the situation.

Tin Leg Economy policyholders do not have Financial Default coverage.

Travelex

Virgin Australia has entered into voluntary administration, similar to bankruptcy, due to the impact of the coronavirus on their business. This became a known event on April 20, 2020. Travelex and their underwriters determined that Virgin Australia has experienced financial default effective April 20, 2020.

Trawick International

On April 21, 2020, Virgin Australia announced that it would seek bankruptcy protection after financial woes related to the coronavirus shutdown. As of April 21, the bankruptcy is no longer considered an Unforeseen event. Coverage related to the bankruptcy is not available for Trawick policies purchased after this date. For policies purchased on or before April 21, there may be coverage. Please review the Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits found in your policy document:

The Company will reimburse You, up to the Maximum Benefit shown on the Confirmation of Coverage, if You are prevented from taking Your Trip for any of the following reasons that are Unforeseen and takes place after the Effective Date:

Bankruptcy and/or Default of Your Travel Supplier that occurs more than ten (10) days following Your Effective Date. Coverage is not provided for the Bankruptcy or Default of the agency from whom You purchased Your Land/Sea Arrangements. Your Scheduled Departure Date must be no more than fifteen (15) months beyond Your Effective Date. Benefits will be paid due to Bankruptcy or Default of an airline only if no alternate transportation is available. If alternate transportation is available, benefits will be limited to the change fee charged to allow You to transfer to another airline in order to get to Your intended destination;

For plans that do offer coverage for Bankruptcy and/or Default of Your Travel Supplier, please note that financial default of Virgin Australia is considered foreseeable under any plans purchased on or after April 21, 2020.
