APRIL Travel Protection

The tragic event on the renowned Las Ramblas, in Barcelona, on August 17, 2017, was declared a terrorist attack by the U.S. Department of State, and it is now a covered event under the April policy terms and conditions.

For coverage, please note the following:

  • Coverage may be afforded under policies purchased prior to the event happening on 8/17/17.
  • As of then, this event in Barcelona is no longer considered unforeseen, so it will not be covered for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, or Trip Delay. This guideline applies only to new policies that are effective on or after the event occured, and covering travel during such time.
  • Terms and conditions may vary by plan. Please refer to your policy terms and conditions document for more information.

The attack in Barcelona has been classified as a terror attack. To qualify for coverage the policy must have been purchased by 8/16/2017. Below is the coverage wording from the Description of Coverage. A terrorist incident is a named peril under Trip Cancellation/Interruption coverage.

“a Terrorist Incident in a City listed on the Insured’s itinerary within 30 days of the Insured’s scheduled arrival; “

“Coverage would be in effect if purchased by 8/16/17 and if plan included Terrorism as a named peril.”

At approximately 4:50 p.m. local time in Barcelona, Spain, a van collided with pedestrians in the Plaza de Catalunya, in the Las Ramblas area of central Barcelona. At least 13 people have been confirmed dead and 80 injured (some seriously), with both numbers expected to rise. ISIS has claimed credit for the attack, and two arrests have been made in connection with the incident. The immediate area has been cordoned off, and travel delays are expected with metro and train stations in close proximity closed, such as the PI. Catalunya metro station. If traveling through the area it is advisable to remain vigilant of your surroundings, heed any directives from police forces and the media, and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.

As of Thursday, August 17, 2017 this event has not been identified as a terrorist attack. If it is, this tragic event may meet the guidelines and requirements for coverage under GeoBlue travel medical plans.

With reference to coverage under IMG’s iTravelInsured® policies:

  • Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption: Benefits may be provided if a Terrorist Incident occurs within 30 days of your scheduled departure date in a city listed on the itinerary of your trip. This same city must not have experienced a Terrorist Incident within the 90 days prior to the Terrorist Incident that is causing your cancellation of your trip. Benefits are not provided if the travel supplier offers a substitute itinerary.
  • Missed Connection: If you miss your cruise or tour departure because your arrival at your trip destination is delayed for 6 or more hours due to terrorism, we will reimburse you up to the maximum benefits amount.
  • Travel Delay: Benefits will be paid up to $125 per day for if you are delayed for 12 hours or more while enrooted to or from or during your trip due to a Terrorist Incident.

Other benefits may also be available depending on the type of coverage purchased and the specific circumstances of the loss.  Please note that policies purchased on or after the date the attack occurred may not provide coverage for claims related to incident. What you need to know about your policy:
As of August 17, the U.S. Department of State has deemed the incident an act of terrorism, meaning there may be coverage for Tin Leg customers to cancel or interrupt their trip. In order to be eligible for these benefits, a Tin Leg policy must have been purchased prior to August 17.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Terrorism:
In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, an event must occur on or after the policy’s effective date and must be deemed an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State. It also must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • The terrorist incident must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary.
  • The terrorist attacks result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage, other benefits, including Trip Delay, Emergency Medical, and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to this event.
