This guideline applies only to new policies that are effective on or after the event, and covering travel during such time. Terms and conditions may vary by APRIL plan; please refer to the actual policy terms & conditions:

  • The terrorist attack must occur within 30 days of your departure and within 100 miles of a city listed on your itinerary.
  • Attack results in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for at least 48 consecutive hours.

Investigators believe the attack was intentional and terroristic in nature, with police reporting 12 deaths currently and 48 others injured. As details of the event continue to unfold, those traveling or living in the impacted area should remain vigilant of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

International Medical Group® (IMG®) offers our condolences to the people suffering from a truck attack on a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, Germany, that killed and injured dozens on Monday, December 19, 2016.

The U.S. Department of State has not officially declared this event a terrorist attack; however, there are some benefits available for those traveling who may have been injured during the bombing.

IMG members who purchased a travel insurance policy prior to December 19, 2016, may receive coverage for accident & sickness medical expense and emergency medical transportation. Policies purchased on or after December 19, 2016, may not provide coverage for claims related directly or indirectly to this bombing.

With reference to coverage under IMG’s iTravelInsured® SE and LX policies:

  • Accident & Sickness Medical Expense: Benefits will be paid for the covered expense incurred, up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the declarations page, as a result of a covered accidental injury, which first occurs during your trip. Only covered expenses incurred during your trip will be reimbursed. Expenses incurred after your trip are not covered.
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation: When you suffer loss of life for any reason or incur a sickness or injury during the course of your trip, the following benefits are payable, up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the declarations page.
    • If the local attending legally qualified physician and iTravelInsured determine that transportation to a hospital or medical facility is medically necessary to treat an unforeseen sickness or injury which is acute or life threatening and adequate medical treatment is not available in the immediate area, the transportation expense incurred will be paid for the usual and customary charges for transportation to the closest hospital or medical facility capable of providing that treatment.
    • If you are traveling alone and will be hospitalized for more than 3 consecutive days and emergency evacuation is not imminent, benefits will be paid to transport one person, chosen by you, by economy transportation, for a single visit to and from your bedside.
    • If you are in the hospital for more than 3 consecutive days and your dependent children who are under 18 years of age and accompanying you on your trip are left unattended, economy transportation will be paid to return the dependents to their home (with an attendant, if considered necessary by iTravelInsured).

In addition, benefits provided under IMG’s iTravelInsured LX policies include:

  • Cancel for Any Reason Coverage Benefits will be paid for 75% of the prepaid, forfeited, non-refundable payments or deposits you paid for your trip provided:
    • Your payment for this policy and enrollment form is received within 20 days of the date your initial payment or deposit for your trip is received and;
    • You insure 100% of the prepaid trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions and also insure within 20 days of the payment or deposit for those travel arrangements the cost of any subsequent travel arrangements (or any other travel arrangements not made through your travel agent) added to your trip; and
    • You cancel your trip two (2) days or more before your scheduled departure date.
  • Interruption for Any Reason Coverage: If you interrupt your trip, 48 hours or more after your actual departure date, for any reason not otherwise covered by this policy, benefits will be paid; up to 75% of the total amount of coverage you purchased, to reimburse you for the prepaid payments or deposits for unused non-refundable land or water travel arrangements.

On Monday, December 19, 2016, an attack occurred at a Christmas market in Berlin, Germany.

What you need to know about your policy:

As of December 19, 2016, the attack in Berlin is no longer considered an unforeseen event. Coverage related to the attack is not available for Tin Leg policies purchased after this date. Tin Leg policies purchased on or prior to December 18, 2016, may provide coverage related to the event, including Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption and Trip Delay benefits.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Terrorism:

In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the event must occur after the policy has been purchased and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary
  • Result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

Travel Delay coverage for Terrorism:
In order for a terrorist attack to be covered under the Trip Delay benefit within Tin Leg policies, it must meet the following requirements for minimum length of delay:

  • Tin Leg Economy policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Standard policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 6 consecutive hours
