Policies that include terrorist attack for trip cancellation or trip interruption may cover the event provided the covered insured & trip comply with policy provisions. Please refer to the actual policy when presented with coverage questions or a claim. Policies purchased prior to 22 Mar, 07:00 GMT, may cover the event.

Please note:

  • Trip cancellation or trip interruption benefits are not payable under any policies purchased after this time since the event is no longer unforeseen. As of 22 Mar, 07:00 GMT, this event is no longer considered unforeseen, so it will not be covered.
  • This guideline applies only to new policies that are effective on or after the event, and covering travel during such time. It does not apply to new policies that cover travel after the event has passed.

CSA Travel Protection

According to CNN reports, three explosions ripped through the Belgian capital of Brussels on Tuesday, killing at least 34 people and wounding about 170 more. Two of the explosions were at the Zaventem Airport and the third was at the Maelbeek metro station. ISIS claimed responsibility for the terror attacks.

CSA Travel Protection and Generali U.S. Branch consider these attacks to be Terrorist Acts as defined by our policy language. Certain CSA Travel Protection plans offer coverage for some effects of a Terrorist Act, provided the requirements of the plan are met. Customers are strongly encouraged to read their Description of Coverage or Insurance Policy for details regarding their available coverage. For plans purchased on or after 3:00AM EST/12:00PM PST on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016 please note that there is no coverage for this specific act; at that time, the attacks were no longer an “unforeseeable event” as required by the policy in order to provide coverage. On Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016, a suicide bomber attacked Brussels, Belgium killing at least 31 people. The U.S. Department of State identified this as a terrorist attack, and as such, these tragic events meet the guidelines and requirements for coverage under certain Global Alert travel protection plans.

Plans purchased on or before March 21st, 2016, may have coverage for these attacks.

Our sympathies go out to those impacted by the attacks in Brussels on March 22nd. RoamRight urges all travelers to be cautious, and review their travel insurance policy for coverage.

Regarding the threat of terrorism, RoamRight policies provide coverage for events within city limits that are identified by the U.S. Government as terrorist attacks and occur within 30 days of a traveler’s departure date.

Specifically, RoamRight’s policies allow for trip cancellation or interruption benefits if:

  • The U.S. Government deems an event as a terrorist attack,
  • The attack occurs after the traveler’s effective date of coverage,
  • The  attack is within the territorial limits of a city listed on the traveler’s itinerary, AND
  • The attack occurs within 30 days of the traveler’s departure.

It is important to note that RoamRight’s standard travel insurance policies do not provide trip cancellation or interruption coverage for war, invasion, acts of foreign enemies, civil war, or hostilities between nations (whether declared or not). To protect against those situations, RoamRight offers a Cancel For Any Reason upgrade that may provide coverage, provided the trip is cancelled 48 or more hours prior to departure.

Travelers who are in-country and experience a political emergency due to government or social upheaval may be protected by RoamRight’s Political Evacuation services, provided that the traveler and the situation meets the provisions outlined in the purchased RoamRight policy.

Tin Leg

On Tuesday, March 22, 2016, three explosions occurred in Brussels, Belgium, at the Zaventem Airport and Maelbeek metro station.

The U.S. Department of State officially declared this an act of Terrorism on 3/22/2016.

What you need to know about your policy:
As of March 22, 2016, the terrorist attacks in Brussels are no longer considered an unforeseen event. Coverage related to the Brussels terrorist attacks is not available for Tin Leg policies purchased after this date.

There may be coverage for Tin Leg customers to cancel or interrupt their trip. In order to be eligible for these benefits, a Tin Leg policy must have been purchased prior to 3/22/2016.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Terrorism:
In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the event must occur after the policy has been purchased and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • The terrorist incident must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary
  • The terrorist attacks result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

Coverage for Travel Delay
In order for terrorism to be covered under the Trip Delay benefit within Tin Leg policies, it must meet the following requirements for minimum length of delay:

  • Tin Leg Economy policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Standard policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 6 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Trip Delay coverage, other benefits, including Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to this event.

Safe Travels Trip Cancellation policies can provide coverage in the event a trip is cancelled or interrupted due to a terrorist attack if:

1)      It occurs after the start date of your trip cancellation coverage;
2)      in a city listed on your itinerary; and
3)      within 30 days of your scheduled arrival.

If you purchased a policy before March 22,2016 the terrorist event, and Brussels is listed on your travel itinerary, you can be eligible for a refund if your trip is cancelled or interrupted due to this specific event.

If you have purchased Safe Travels International Travel Medical and your Trawick policy number is STI-7364 then you can get a full refund of the premium you paid for the insurance, if you decide not to travel or you can request a change in destination.  Requests for changes must be in writing before the effective date.
