The powerful earthquake that struck central Italy early Wednesday, August 24, 2016, falls within the policy terms and conditions of our APRIL plans as a natural disaster.

Policies purchased before the earthquake would cover the event. As of then, this occurrence is no longer considered unforeseen, therefore, no coverage would be provided. Terms and conditions may vary by program. Please refer to the actual policy documents for more details.

  • Trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits are not payable if a natural hazard (such as a brushfire, tropical storm, or hurricane) is named on or becomes foreseen before the effective date of the policy.
  • This guideline applies only to new policies that are effective on or after the event, and covering travel during such time. It does not apply to new policies that cover travel after the event has passed.

August 24th, 2016

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck a mountainous stretch of central Italy early Wednesday, killing at least 120 people, trapping scores under debris and setting off tremors that awakened residents in Rome, nearly 100 miles to the southwest. Customers are strongly encouraged to read their Description of Coverage or Insurance Policy for details regarding their available coverage. For plans that do offer coverage for natural disasters, please note that there is no coverage for this specific event under any plans purchased on or after Wednesday, August 24th 2016. On Wednesday, August 24th at 3:36 a.m. local time, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck central Italy, with local media reporting widespread structural damage, collapsed buildings and fatalities in the towns of Accumoli, Amatrice, Posta and Arquata del Tronto. 73 deaths have already been confirmed, with numbers expected to increase within the next few hours as first responders continue to search for any survivors among the debris. Major roads in the surrounding area have been closed or obstructed by rubble, and any non-essential travel to the region of Umbria should be avoided in the immediate aftermath. Travelers are advised to be mindful of emergency protocol, potential aftershocks and to closely monitor any warnings or directives issued by local authorities. Medical care at local network and non-network facilities as a result of these events may be covered under GeoBlue medical plans, and evacuation due to a natural disaster event may be available under certain GeoBlue medical plans if deemed necessary per the additional PEND coverage.

On Tuesday, August 23, 2016, more than 70 people were killed and dozens more were missing after a magnitude-6.2 earthquake and a series of aftershocks struck several towns in central Italy, according to Italy’s civil protection agency.

International Medical Group® (IMG®) members who purchased a travel insurance policy prior to August 23, 2016, may receive trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical evacuation, medical, travel delay or missed connection benefits if their travel plans are affected by this event. Policies purchased on or after August 23 may not provide coverage for claims related directly or indirectly to this earthquake.

Inclement Weather” means any weather condition that delays the scheduled arrival or departure of a Common Carrier.

With reference to coverage under IMG’s iTravelInsured® Travel Lite, SE and LX policies:

  • Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption: Benefits will be paid, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Declarations Page, to reimburse You for the amount unused non-refundable Prepaid Payments or Deposits You paid for Travel Arrangements, including up to $75 for the cost of airline-imposed fees to rebank frequent flyer miles for air flights to join Your Trip when You are prevented from taking Your Trip due to:
    • Inclement Weather that causes complete cessation of services for at least 6 consecutive hours of the Common Carrier on which You are scheduled to travel;
    • Up to 7 days mandatory evacuation ordered by local government authorities at Your Trip destination (or official public evacuation notices or recommendations without a mandatory evacuation order issued) due to adverse weather or Natural Disaster;
    • Your or Your Traveling Companion’s primary place of residence or destination being rendered uninhabitable and remaining uninhabitable during Your scheduled Trip, by fire, flood, burglary or other Natural Disaster. The Company will only pay benefits for Losses occurring within 30 calendar days after the Natural Disaster makes Your destination accommodations uninhabitable. Your destination is uninhabitable if: (i) the building structure itself is unstable and there is a risk of collapse in whole or in part; (ii) there is exterior or structural damage allowing elemental intrusion, such as rain, wind, hail, or flood; (iii) immediate safety hazards have yet to be cleared such as debris on roofs or downed electrical lines; or (iv) the rental property is without electricity or water. Benefits are not payable if a storm, snow storm, blizzard or hurricane is named on or before the Effective Date of Your Trip Cancellation coverage.
  • Accident & Sickness Medical Expense: Benefits will be paid for the Covered Expense incurred, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Declarations Page, as a result of a Covered Accidental Injury, which first occurs during Your Trip. Only Covered Expenses incurred during Your Trip will be reimbursed. Expenses incurred after Your Trip are not covered.
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation: When You suffer loss of life for any reason or incur a Sickness or Injury during the course of Your Trip, the following benefit is payable, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Declarations Page.
    • Emergency Medical Evacuation: If the local attending Legally Qualified Physician and iTravelInsured, Inc. determine that transportation to a Hospital or medical facility is Medically Necessary to treat an unforeseen Sickness or Injury which is acute or life threatening and adequate Medical Treatment is not available in the immediate area, the Transportation Expense incurred will be paid for the Usual and Customary Charges for transportation to the closest Hospital or medical facility capable of providing that treatment.
  • Travel Delay: Benefits will reimburse for reasonable accommodation, meal and local transportation expenses incurred, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Declarations Page, if You are delayed for 6 hours or more while enrooted to or from, or during Your Trip, due to:
    • A documented weather condition preventing You from getting to the point of departure.
  • Missed Connection: If You miss Your cruise or tour departure because Your arrival at Your Trip destination is delayed for 3 or more hours due to:
    • A documented weather condition preventing You from getting to the point of departure.

Tin Leg

At 9:36 PM ET on August 23, 2016 (3:36 AM on August 24 local time) an earthquake occurred in Central Italy.

What you need to know about your policy:
As of August 23, 2016, the Central Italy earthquake is no longer considered an unforeseen event. Coverage related to the earthquake is not available for Tin Leg policies purchased after this date. Tin Leg policies purchased on or prior to August 22, 2016 may provide coverage related to the event, including Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption and Trip Delay benefits.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Natural Disaster:
In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the event must occur after the policy has been purchased and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Accommodations at your destination are made uninhabitable
  • Your or your traveling companion’s principal place of residence has been rendered uninhabitable
  • Mandatory evacuation ordered by local authorities at your destination due to the earthquake. You must have 50% or less of Your Trip remaining at the time the mandatory evacuation ends, in order for this benefit to be payable.

Travel Delay coverage for Natural Disaster:
In order for an earthquake to be covered under the Trip Delay benefit within Tin Leg policies, it must meet the following requirements for minimum length of delay:

  • Tin Leg Economy policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Standard policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 6 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Travel Delay coverage, other benefits, including Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to the earthquake.
