Squaremouth’s travel insurance providers give their official position statements explaining coverage for the Boeing 737 Max 8 crash that occurred on March 10, 2019.

International Medical Group

International Medical Group® (IMG®) offers our condolences to the victims, family members, and all those affected by the plane crashes that killed 189 people on October 29, 2018 in Indonesia and 157 people on Sunday, March 10, 2019 in Ethiopia.

Due to these events, on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, the Federal Aviation Administration issued an emergency order grounding Boeing 737 Max jets in the United States. Several other countries around the world have taken the same action. IMG members who purchased a travel protection plan may receive trip interruption, trip cancellation, missed connection or travel delay benefits if their travel plans were or are affected by the FAA’s action.

With reference to coverage under IMG’s iTravelInsured® Lite, SE and LX plans and the FAA’s action:

  • Trip Cancellation: Can reimburse nonrefundable trip payments in the event of cancellation, up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits of the plan, due to:
    • i) Mechanical breakdown that causes complete cessation of services for at least six (6) consecutive hours of the Common Carrier on which You are scheduled to travel.

All cancellations must be reported to the Travel Supplier within 72 hours of the event causing the need to cancel. If the event delays the reporting of the cancellation beyond the 72 hours, the event should be reported as soon as possible. Increased amounts of Published Penalties and unused non-refundable Prepaid Payments or Deposits that result from all other delays of reporting beyond 72 hours are not covered.

  • Trip Interruption: Benefits can be paid, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount, for the non-refundable, unused portion of the prepaid expenses for land or water Travel Arrangements and/or the additional transportation costs paid (less the value of the original unused travel ticket) to transport the Insured to their originally scheduled return destination or to join or rejoin their Trip when an Insured must interrupt their trip due to:
    • i) Mechanical breakdown that causes complete cessation of services for at least six (6) consecutive hours of the Common Carrier on which You are scheduled to travel.
  • Travel Delay: If an Insured is delayed for 12 hours or more while en-route to or from or during a Covered Trip, benefits can be paid, up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits of the plan, due to:
    • a) any delay of a Common Carrier. The delay must be certified by the Common Carrier;

The Travel Delay benefit can cover reasonable accommodation, meal, telephone call and local transportation expenses incurred, subject to a daily limit. In the SE and LX plans, this can also provide reimbursement for additional kennel fees for an Insured’s dog or cat, internet usage fees, and movie fees. Reimbursement for all items is subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations of the plan.

In addition, benefits provided under IMG’s iTravelInsured SE and LX plans include:

  • Trip Cancellation: Can reimburse nonrefundable trip payments in the event of cancellation, up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits of the plan, due to:
    • u) a cancellation of Your Trip if Your arrival on the Trip is delayed and causes You to lose fifty percent (50%) or more of the scheduled Trip duration due to the reasons covered under the Missed Connection Benefit.

If the event delays the reporting of the cancellation beyond the 72 hours, the event should be reported as soon as possible.   • Missed Connection: If an Insured misses their cruise or tour departure because they are delayed 6 or more hours due to:
    • a) any delay of a Common Carrier. The delay must be certified by the Common Carrier;

Benefits can be paid, up to the maximum benefit amount shown in the Schedule of Benefits of the plan. The Missed Connection benefit can cover the Insured’s additional transportation cost to join their trip and the insured’s prepaid expenses for their unused land or water travel arrangements. Subject to a daily limit, the Missed Connection benefit can also cover reasonable accommodation and meal expenses, which (i) are necessarily incurred by the Insured, (ii) for which the Insured has proof of purchase and (iii) which were not paid for or provided by any other source. Reimbursement for all items is subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions and limitations of the plan.

Benefits provided under IMG’s iTravelInsured LX plans also include:

  • Cancel for Any Reason Coverage (not available for New York residents): Benefits will be paid for 75% of the prepaid, forfeited, non-refundable payments or deposits you paid for your trip provided:
    • Your payment or deposit for this plan and enrollment form is received within 20 days of the date your initial payment or deposit for your trip is received and;
    • You insure 100% of the prepaid trip costs that are subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions and also insure within 20 days of the payment or deposit for those travel arrangements the cost of any subsequent travel arrangements (or any other travel arrangements not made through your travel agent) added to your trip; and
    • You cancel your trip two (2) days or more before your scheduled departure date.
  • Interruption for Any Reason Coverage (not available for New York residents): If you interrupt your trip, 48 hours or more after your actual departure date, for any reason not otherwise covered by this plan, benefits will be paid; up to 75% of the total amount of coverage you purchased, to reimburse you for the prepaid payments or deposits for unused non-refundable land or water travel arrangements.

Tin Leg

On Sunday, March 10, 2019, a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft crashed, killing 157 people onboard. It was the second crash of a Boeing 737 Max 8 in the past five months, leaving many travelers concerned over the safety of the jets, and causing countries and airlines to ground the planes.

What you need to know about your policy:

Following the crash, many aviation regulators and airlines worldwide are grounding the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. Unfortunately, there is no coverage under the Trip Cancellation benefit within any Tin Leg policies.

The only available coverage for Tin Leg Adventure, Standard, or Luxury policyholders is Travel Delay. Tin Leg Economy policyholders are not eligible for coverage under Travel Delay.

Travel Delay Coverage for the Boeing 737 Max 8 Crash:

In order for a delay to be covered under the Travel Delay benefit for the Tin Leg Adventure, Standard, or Luxury policies, it must be classified as a common carrier delay, and it must last at least 6 hours. If the delay reaches that point, travelers may be refunded the expenses incurred for meals and accommodations during the delay.
