Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection urges all American travelers to Europe to be cautious in light of the U.S. State Department’s most recent warning concerning terrorism and European travel.

We encourage all travelers to sign up for the State Department’s STEP program at www.travel.state.gov. To underscore the gravity of this situation, we are communicating this information to all travelers insured with Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.

Depending on the BHTP policy purchased, travelers may be eligible for coverage that interrupts travel plans. Our customers can contact BHTP at 844-411-BHTP to review the specific benefits of their policy.

On Monday November 21, 2016, the U.S. Department of State alerted its citizens to the heightened risk of terrorist attacks throughout Europe, particularly during the holiday season. U.S. citizens should exercise caution at holiday festivals, events and outdoor markets, while traveling through Europe.

The U.S. Department of State issued a Europe Travel Alert on November 21st, 2016, informing U.S. citizens to the risk of potential terrorist attacks this holiday season. Travelers are advised to exercise vigilance when visiting tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers, attending major events and using public transportation.

Global Alert understands those planning to travel in Europe may have questions about travel protection and their upcoming trip.

Plans are still available for purchase to cover travel in Europe. This alert does not restrict any destination countries from coverage.

Global Alert plans offer Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits in the event of a terrorist attack, see plan for details. These terms of coverage are not impacted by the Europe Travel Alert.

Canceling a trip due to the Europe Travel Alert can be covered by a plan with Cancel For Any Reason coverage.

Tin Leg

On Monday, November 21, 2016, the U.S. Department of State issued a Europe Travel Alert, informing Americans traveling abroad of the risk of terrorist attacks throughout Europe during the holiday season.

What you need to know about your policy:

For non-policyholders:

As of November 22, 2016, the Europe Travel Alert has not resulted in a terrorist event, meaning cancellation coverage, including the terrorism benefit, is still available for new policies purchased for trips worldwide.

For current policyholders:

As of November 22, 2016, the Europe Travel Alert has not resulted in a terrorist event, meaning there is no coverage for losses related to the alert for current Tin Leg policyholders.

If the Europe Travel Alert does result in a terrorist event, and meets Tin Leg’s definition of “terrorism” (below), there may be coverage for Tin Leg customers to cancel or interrupt their trip. In order to be eligible for these benefits, a Tin Leg policy must have been purchased prior to the date the terrorist event occurred.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Terrorism:
In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the event must occur on or after the policy effective date and must be deemed an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State. It also must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • The terrorist incident must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary.
  • The terrorist attacks result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage, other benefits, including Trip Delay, Emergency Medical, and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to this event.
