Official position statements from Squaremouth’s travel insurance providers on the Europe Travel Alert issued by the U.S. Department of State on May 31.

APRIL

On Tuesday, May 31, 2016, the U.S. Department of State issued a Travel Alert informing Americans traveling to Europe of the risk of potential terrorist attacks this summer.

What you need to know about your APRIL policy:

For new policyholders:

As of 6/2, the Europe Travel Alert has not resulted in a terrorist attack. You may still purchase an APRIL policy for upcoming trips to Europe.

For current policyholders:

As of 6/2, the Europe Travel Alert has not resulted in a terrorist attack and, therefore, the provisions of the policies remain unchanged. There is no coverage for travel losses due to this alert.

If the Travel Alert does result in a terrorist attack, as deemed by the U.S. Department of State, the loss needs to meet the following criteria for coverage:

Criteria:

  • APRIL policy must have been purchased prior to the date of the terrorist attack
  • The terrorist attack must occur on or after the Effective Date of the policy
  • The event must be deemed an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State
  • Meet the policy’s Terrorism triggers for Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption coverage:

Trip Cancellation / Economy / VIP / Universal Annual / Elite Annual plans:

· The terrorist attack must occur within 30 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary.
· Attack results in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for at least 48 consecutive hours.

Choice plan:

· The terrorist attack must occur within 30 days of your departure and within 100 miles of a city listed on your itinerary.
· Attack results in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for at least 48 consecutive hours.

Other benefits, including Trip Delay, Emergency Medical, and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to this event.

Global Alert

The U.S. Department of State issued a Europe Travel Alert on May 31st, 2016, informing U.S. citizens to the risk of potential terrorist attacks this summer. Travelers are advised to exercise vigilance when visiting tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centers, attending major events and using public transportation.

Global Alert understands those planning to travel in Europe may have questions about travel protection and their upcoming trip.

Plans are still available for purchase to cover travel in Europe. This alert does not restrict any destination countries from coverage.

Global Alert plans offer Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits in the event of a terrorist attack. These terms of coverage are not impacted by the Europe Travel Alert.

Canceling a trip due to the Europe Travel Alert can be covered by a plan with Cancel For Any Reason coverage.

Tin Leg

On Tuesday, May 31, 2016, the U.S. Department of State issued a Europe Travel Alert, informing Americans traveling abroad of the risk of terrorist attacks throughout Europe.

What you need to know about your policy:

For non-policyholders:

As of June 1, 2016, the Europe Travel Alert has not resulted in a terrorist event, meaning cancellation coverage, including the terrorism benefit, is still available for new policies purchased for trips worldwide.

For current policyholders:

As of June 1, 2016, the Europe Travel Alert has not resulted in a terrorist event, meaning there is no coverage for losses related to the alert for current Tin Leg policyholders.

If the Europe Travel Alert does result in a terrorist event, and meets Tin Leg’s definition of “terrorism” (below), there may be coverage for Tin Leg customers to cancel or interrupt their trip. In order to be eligible for these benefits, a Tin Leg policy must have been purchased prior to the date the terrorist event occurred.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Terrorism:
In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the event must occur on or after the policy effective date and must be deemed an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State. It also must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • The terrorist incident must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary.
  • The terrorist attacks result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage, other benefits, including Trip Delay, Emergency Medical, and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to this event.
