APRIL

Hurricanes Madeline and Lester, in the eastern Pacific Ocean, fall within our policy terms & conditions as inclement weather.

Policies purchased prior to the occurrence would cover the event. As of then, it’s no longer considered unforeseen, so it is not covered.

It appears that both storms became tropical storms and then hurricanes over the weekend.

  • Hurricane Madeline has weakened, but it is nearing the Big Island of Hawaii. A warning has been issued for the islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
  • Hurricane Lester weakened briefly to a Category 3 hurricane on Tuesday afternoon and is now a Category 4 again. Lester might approach the Hawaiian Islands by Labor Day weekend.

Global Alert

On Sunday, August 28th, Tropical Storm Madeline officially formed in the Pacific Ocean, and has since strengthened into a hurricane. The storm is expected to impact Hawaii’s Big Island. While many travel suppliers and airlines are trying to reroute flights, some delays and cancellations are inevitable. Global Alert understands those with plans to travel to this area will have questions about their coverage, and they are encouraged to call us 24/7 with any questions.

It is important to note, don’t rush out to buy travel insurance now to cover Madeline as Global Alert plans do not provide coverage for a storm that was already named prior to the purchase of travel insurance. In this case, policies purchased on or after August 28th, 2016 will not cover losses related to Madeline.

Policies purchased on or before August 27th, 2016 may have coverage for this storm. Following are some general guidelines regarding the various coverages available:

Trip Delay – Additional meal and accommodation expenses may be reimbursed up to the amount provided by the plan if you have left home and travel is delayed 9 hours or more due to flight delays or cancellations. The dollar amount of coverage will be based on the plan you selected. Please refer to your policy documents for complete details.

Missed Connection – All of our plans also include the missed connection benefit if your flight is delayed for 3 hours or more. This benefit can reimburse unused land and water arrangements and additional transportation to catch up to the trip. The dollar amount of coverage for Missed Connection will vary depending on the plan you purchased. For more details, please review your plan documents.

Trip Interruption – Global Alert plans offer Trip Interruption coverage for your travel arrangements if they are disrupted due to the storm and you must leave or return later than originally scheduled. Depending on the Global Alert plan, covered reasons to interrupt the trip can include: 12 hour or more flight delay due to weather; or your home or accommodations at your destination made uninhabitable. Trip Interruption bases the dollar amount of coverage on the amount of trip cost you insured on the plan. To be certain that you have this protection, please review your plan certificate or call Global Alert.

Trip Cancellation – Should your flight be delayed or canceled due to Madeline, Global Alert plans can cover cancellation penalties if you are not able to travel for 12 hours or more. Based on the plan selected, Global Alert can also cover you if your destination is officially declared uninhabitable, or if your home is made uninhabitable due to the storm. The dollar amount of coverage is determined by the amount of trip cost you insured on the plan. Please read your policy certificate for specific information.

iTravelInsured

Tropical Storm Madeline — named on August 26, 2016 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration** (“NOAA “) — could pass “dangerously close” to the Big Island of Hawaii, causing hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and high surf, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

Reports indicate that a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Big Island, while a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Maui County as Tropical Storm Madeline draws nearer.

International Medical Group® (IMG®) members who purchased a travel insurance policy prior to August 26, 2016, may receive trip cancellation, trip interruption, missed connection or travel delay benefits if their travel plans are affected by this event. Policies purchased on or after August 26 may not provide coverage for claims related directly or indirectly to this tropical storm.

“Inclement Weather” means any weather condition that delays the scheduled arrival or departure of a Common Carrier.

With reference to coverage under IMG’s iTravelInsured® Travel Lite, SE and LX policies:

  • Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption: Benefits will be paid, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Declarations Page, to reimburse You for the amount unused non-refundable Prepaid Payments or Deposits You paid for Travel Arrangements, including up to $75 for the cost of airline-imposed fees to rebank frequent flyer miles for air flights to join Your Trip when You are prevented from taking Your Trip due to:
    • Inclement Weather that causes complete cessation of services for at least 6 consecutive hours of the Common Carrier on which You are scheduled to travel;
    • Up to 7 days mandatory evacuation ordered by local government authorities at Your Trip destination (or official public evacuation notices or recommendations without a mandatory evacuation order issued) due to adverse weather or Natural Disaster;
    • Your or Your Traveling Companion’s primary place of residence or destination being rendered uninhabitable and remaining uninhabitable during Your scheduled Trip, by fire, flood, burglary or other Natural Disaster. The Company will only pay benefits for Losses occurring within 30 calendar days after the Natural Disaster makes Your destination accommodations uninhabitable. Your destination is uninhabitable if: (i) the building structure itself is unstable and there is a risk of collapse in whole or in part; (ii) there is exterior or structural damage allowing elemental intrusion, such as rain, wind, hail, or flood; (iii) immediate safety hazards have yet to be cleared such as debris on roofs or downed electrical lines; or (iv) the rental property is without electricity or water. Benefits are not payable if a storm, snow storm, blizzard or hurricane is named on or before the Effective Date of Your Trip Cancellation coverage.
  • Missed Connection: If You miss Your cruise or tour departure because Your arrival at Your Trip destination is delayed for 3 or more hours due to:
    • A documented weather condition preventing You from getting to the point of departure.
  • Travel Delay: Benefits will reimburse for reasonable accommodation, meal and local transportation expenses incurred, up to the Maximum Benefit Amount shown in the Declarations Page, if You are delayed for 6 hours or more while enrooted to or from, or during Your Trip, due to:
    • A documented weather condition preventing You from getting to the point of departure.

Trip Interruption bases the dollar amount of coverage on the amount of trip cost you insured on the plan. To be certain that you have this protection, please review your plan certificate or call MH Ross.

Trip Cancellation – Should your flight be delayed or canceled due to Madeline, MH Ross plans can cover cancellation penalties if you are not able to travel for 12 hours or more. Based on the plan selected, MH Ross can also cover you if your destination is officially declared uninhabitable due to the storm, if your home or work place is made uninhabitable, if your destination is under an official hurricane warning issued by NOAA within 24 hours of the trip. A mandatory evacuation can also be considered, if when the evacuation ends and there is less than half or less than 4 days left of your trip. The dollar amount of coverage is determined by the amount of trip cost you insured on the plan. Please read your policy certificate for specific information.

Tin Leg

On August 27, 2016, Hurricane Madeline was named as a tropical storm that has since evolved into a hurricane with a path toward Hawaii.

What you need to know about your policy:
As of August 27, Hurricane Madeline is no longer considered an unforeseen event. Coverage related to the hurricane is not available for Tin Leg policies purchased after this date. Tin Leg policies purchased on or prior to August 26 may provide coverage related to the event, including Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption and Trip Delay benefits.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Hurricanes:
In order for a hurricane to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the hurricane must occur after the policy has been purchased and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Accommodations at your destination are made uninhabitable
  • Your or your traveling companion’s principal place of residence has been rendered uninhabitable
  • A mandatory evacuation is ordered by local authorities at your destination. You must have 50% or less of your trip remaining when the evacuation ends to be eligible for this benefit.

Travel Delay coverage for Hurricanes:
In order for a hurricane to be covered under the Trip Delay benefit within Tin Leg policies, it must meet the following requirements for minimum length of delay:

  • Tin Leg Economy policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Standard policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 6 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Travel Delay coverage, other benefits, including Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to the hurricane.
