If you purchased a travel insurance policy before June 28 that includes Terrorism coverage, you may be covered to cancel your upcoming trip to Istanbul due to the Ataturk airport terrorist attack.
On June 28, 2016, the terrorist attack at Istanbul Airport was declared an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State, meeting one of the requirements for Terrorism coverage on most policies.
Requirements for coverage in the event of a terrorist attack can vary between policies, but typically these criteria include:
- The attack must be declared terrorism by the U.S. Department of State
- Your scheduled departure date must be within 7-30 days of the attack
- The attack must occur in, or within a certain number of miles of, a city listed on your itinerary
Some policies will not cover cancellation for a terrorist attack if there has been a previous attack in the same city within a specified period, typically 30-90 days. Refer to your policy certificate for specific coverage and requirements.
If your trip does not meet the requirements for Terrorism coverage on your policy, you will not be covered to cancel your trip because of the terrorist attack at Istanbul’s international airport, unless you have Cancel For Any Reason.
The Cancel For Any Reason upgrade allows you to cancel your trip without providing a reason for your cancellation. However, you must cancel your trip at least 2-3 days before your scheduled departure date, and you will only be reimbursed up to 75% of your trip cost.
This upgrade, which can increase your premium by as much as 40%, is only available within 14-30 days of your first booking for your trip. You must insure 100% of your prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses to be eligible for Cancel For Any Reason.
