Can I cancel my trip if there is a travel alert for an event I am attending?

Last Updated:

Standard travel insurance will not cover you to cancel your trip because there is a travel alert for an event you are attending.

A travel alert is not a covered reason to cancel your trip, even if the alert specifically mentions an event that you are planning to attend. Standard travel insurance policies require that you cancel for a reason specifically listed in the policy, unless you have the Cancel for Any Reason upgrade.

Cancel for Any Reason gives you the option to cancel your trip for reasons not listed in your policy, such as a travel alert or fear of a terrorist attack. This upgrade can increase your premium by 40%, and requires that you insure 100% of your trip cost and purchase the policy within 14-30 days of your first booking for the trip. Cancel for Any Reason will only reimburse up to 75% of your trip cost, and it requires that you cancel at least 2-3 days before your scheduled departure.

If a terrorist attack occurs at your event site within a specified number of days of your departure date— typically 7-30 days — you may be covered to cancel under the Terrorism benefit. Terrorist acts must be declared terrorism by the U.S. Department of State and the policy must have been purchased prior to the attack in order to be eligible for coverage.
