Can I still buy travel insurance for Hurricane Matthew?

No, travel insurance is no longer available with coverage for Hurricane Matthew.

Travel insurance cannot be purchased for a storm once it has been named. Hurricane Matthew was first named Tropical Storm Matthew on September 28, 2016, and named Hurricane Matthew the following day on September 29. See Squaremouth’s provider position statements for Hurricane Matthew for provider-specific information.

Depending on your provider, Hurricane Matthew became a foreseen event, and therefore no longer eligible for coverage, on one of these dates. Policies purchased on or after that date will not include coverage for the hurricane.

If you purchased a policy after Hurricane Matthew was named and no longer want the policy, you may be able to cancel it. Many policies include a Money Back Guarantee period, during which you can cancel your policy for a full refund, as long is it is at least one day before your scheduled departure date.

Travel insurance is still available with hurricane coverage for future storms. Travelers who have a policy in place before a storm is named may be eligible for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Travel Delay and Missed Connection benefits for losses related to the hurricane.
