Does my travel insurance cover me to come home early because of the earthquake?

You may be covered to return home early due to the earthquake under the Trip Interruption benefit if you meet your policy’s requirements. The policy must have been purchased before the earthquake occurred.

More Detail

Trip Interruption due to an earthquake is only available if the policy was purchased prior to the earthquake occurring.

Trip Interruption provides coverage for transportation to return home early, as well as reimbursement for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses for the unused portion of your trip.

Trip Interruption coverage for earthquakes is triggered by:

  • Structural damage to your accommodations at your destination or your home residence that renders them uninhabitable
  • Delay of at least 12-48 hours of your flight, cruise or other transportation by a common carrier
  • Mandatory evacuation of your destination that lasts for a specified amount of time — typically at least half of your trip

If you were in an area affected by the earthquake, you may also be covered under your policy’s Non-Medical Evacuation benefit. This benefit is designed to cover you for transportation to a place of safety during a natural disaster. Requirements for this benefit vary.

Squaremouth recommends referring to your policy certificate for your specific coverage or contacting your provider to file a claim.
