What if my flight is canceled because of the terrorist attack at Istanbul Airport?

If your flight is canceled due to the terrorist attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport, you may be covered under your policy’s Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption benefits.

You must have had a travel insurance policy in place before June 28, the day of the terrorist attack, to be eligible for coverage related to the attack.

Trip Cancellation can reimburse your insured trip cost if your flight is canceled before you leave home for your trip, while Trip Interruption provides coverage if you are already traveling and are prevented from continuing your trip. Trip Interruption offers reimbursement for your unused, prepaid travel arrangements, and often covers transportation home.

Terrorism is listed as a covered reason on many policies. To meet travel insurance’s definition of terrorism, an event typically has to be declared an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State.

On June 28, the State Department declared the attack at Istanbul Airport an act of terrorism, so you may be covered to cancel if you meet your policy’s other requirements.

Some policies provide coverage to cancel your trip if a terrorist attack causes your departure or destination airport to stop all flights for at least 12-48 hours.

Otherwise, to qualify for Terrorism coverage under the Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits, you must meet certain conditions. These typically include:

  • Terrorism must be listed as a covered reason to cancel on your policy
  • The attack must meet the policy’s definition of terrorism
  • The terrorist attack must occur within 7-30 days of your scheduled departure date
  • The attack must occur in or near a city listed on your itinerary
  • Some policies require that no prior attacks have occurred in the same city within the past 90 days
