What type of travel insurance policy do I need to buy to include coverage for terrorism?

Most travel insurance policies cover Terrorism as standard under Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits.

This benefit typically allows travelers to cancel or interrupt their trip due to a terrorist attack that occurs in their departure city, or a city listed on their itinerary. The event must meet the policy’s specific requirements, which generally include:

  • The incident must be deemed as terrorism by the US Department of State.
  • The incident must occur after the policy is purchased, and within 30 days of your scheduled departure date.
  • The incident must occur in or near a city on your itinerary.

Additionally, some policies also require that no recent terrorist incidents have occurred in the same city within a specified period of time, usually in the past 30 or 90 days. Many policies do not have this requirement – read through the terrorism coverage for each policy available on Squaremouth.

Please note, as of March 22, 2016, the terrorist attacks in Brussels are no longer considered unforeseen. Policies purchased on or after this date will not provide coverage for losses related to the March 22 bombings in Brussels.
