Will my current travel insurance policy cover me to cancel my trip to Belgium?

If your travel insurance policy includes terrorism coverage within the Trip Cancellation benefit you may be covered to cancel your trip to Belgium due to the terrorist attacks in Brussels. Coverage for terrorism varies between each policy and often times must meet certain requirements in order to be covered.

These requirements may include:

  • The attack occurs within 7-30 days of your scheduled departure
  • The attack occurs within a certain number of miles from a city listed on your travel itinerary
  • The city has not had a previous terrorist attack within a certain number of days
  • The terrorist attack meet the policy’s definition of a terrorist attack, which typically means it must be declared an act of terrorism by the US State Department.

Please refer to your specific policy documents to see what your requirements for coverage may be.

Additionally, if your policy includes the optional Cancel For Any Reason upgrade then you are able to cancel your upcoming trip, even if you do not have specific terrorism coverage. Using the Cancel For Any Reason benefit, you will be reimbursed up to 75% of your trip cost, and are required to cancel your trip at least 2-3 days prior to your scheduled departure date.
