The event, which occurred Sunday morning, 1 Jan 2017, approximately 1:00 a.m. local time, falls within the definition of a terrorist attack. Please note:

  • Coverage may be afforded under policies purchased prior to the event.
  • As of then, this event is no longer considered unforeseen, so it will not be covered. This guideline applies only to new policies that are effective on or after the event, and covering travel during such time.
  • Terms and conditions may vary by program; please refer to the actual policy. All claims should be examined on their own circumstances & merits.

On Sunday, January 1st, 2017, a shooter attacked a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, killing at least 39 people. Global Alert extends our deepest sympathies to those impacted by this tragedy. The U.S. Department of State identified this as a terrorist attack, and as such, this horrific event meets the guidelines and requirements for coverage under certain Global Alert travel protection plans.

Plans purchased on or before December 31st, 2016, may have coverage for these attacks.

Early January 1, 2017, a shooting at Reina nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey left 39 dead and 69 more injured. Among the casualties, sixteen are being reported as foreigners. As of Tuesday, January 3rd, the gunman and perpetrator of the attack remains at large, with ISIS having claimed responsibility for the massacre. It is believed extremists are specifically targeting areas frequented by U.S. citizens and expatriates, and the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul is urging Americans living or traveling in the impacted area to remain cautious of their surroundings at all times, implement their own safety plans and avoid large crowds or crowded locales.

Tin Leg

On Sunday, January 1, 2017, a terrorist attack occurred inside a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey.

What you need to know about your policy:
As of January 1, 2017, the attack in Istanbul is no longer considered an unforeseen event. Coverage related to the attack is not available for Tin Leg policies purchased after this date. Tin Leg policies purchased prior to January 1, 2017, may provide coverage related to the event, including Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption and Trip Delay benefits.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Terrorism:

In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the event must occur after the policy has been purchased and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary
  • Result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

Travel Delay coverage for Terrorism:
In order for a terrorist attack to be covered under the Trip Delay benefit within Tin Leg policies, it must meet the following requirements for minimum length of delay:

  • Tin Leg Economy policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Standard policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 6 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Travel Delay coverage, other benefits, including Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to the event.
