London Mosque Attack – Provider Position Statements

One person was killed and eleven others injured early morning on Monday, 19th of June, when a van plowed into a crowd outside of a Mosque in the Finsbury Park area of London, on Seven Sisters Road. The crowd had just vacated the nearby Muslim Welfare House after gathering in observance of the Ramadan Holiday. After carrying out the attack, the driver of the vehicle attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended by the crowd that had gathered outside of the Mosque and later arrested by London Metro Police. He has been identified as 47 year old David Osborne, who had been living in Pentwyn, Wales. Travelers are advised to heed all directives from security personnel and to monitor local media for further updates to the incident and local traffic diversions.

As of Tuesday, June 20, 2017, this incident has not been identified as a terrorist attack.

Tin Leg

On June 19, 2017, a van drove into a group of pedestrians outside of a mosque in north London.

What you need to know about your policy:
On June 19, the U.S. Department of State officially deemed the incident an act of terrorism, meaning there may be coverage for current Tin Leg policyholders 
to cancel or interrupt their trip. In order to be eligible for these benefits, a Tin Leg policy must have been purchased prior to June 19.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Terrorism:
In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, an event must occur on or after the policy’s effective date and must be deemed an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State. It also must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • The terrorist incident must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary.
  • The terrorist attacks result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage, other benefits, including Trip Delay, Emergency Medical, and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to this event.
