Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

In the wake of the attack on the London subway on 9/15/2017, the attack meets Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection’s definition of an act of terrorism. In order to qualify for coverage, policies must have been purchased prior to 9/15/17. Below is the coverage wording from the Description of Coverage. A terrorist incident is a named peril under Trip Cancellation/Interruption coverage.

“a Terrorist Incident in a City listed on the Insured’s itinerary within 30 days of the Insured’s scheduled arrival; “

“Coverage would be in effect if purchased by 9/15/17 and if plan included Terrorism as a named peril.”

On September 15, 2017 at about 8:20 a.m. local time an improvised explosive device was detonated in the Parson’s Green underground station in London during the morning rush hour, resulting in 29 injured. Police have called the incident a terrorist attack and there is currently a manhunt underway for the suspect; no arrests have been made so far. The area around the station has been evacuated, so delays may be expected. Travelers are being cautioned to remain vigilant of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

Tin Leg

On September 15, 2017, a bomb exploded on a London subway, injuring more than 20 people.

What you need to know about your policy:
As of September 15, the U.S. Department of State has not officially deemed the incident an act of terrorism, meaning there is no coverage for losses related to the attack for current Tin Leg policyholders.

If the attack is named a terrorist event, there may be coverage for Tin Leg customers to cancel or interrupt their trip. In order to be eligible for these benefits, a Tin Leg policy must have been purchased prior to September 15.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Terrorism:
In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, an event must occur on or after the policy’s effective date and must be deemed an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State. It also must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • The terrorist incident must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary.
  • The terrorist attacks result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage, other benefits, including Trip Delay, Emergency Medical, and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to this event.
