A gunman stormed Resorts World Manila adjacent to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) in the Philippines Thursday in an attempted robbery. At least 35 people died from smoke inhalation while the gunman torched gambling tables, law enforcement and company officials said. It is reported that the gunman took his own life and was not acting on behalf of a terrorist organization. Those is the vicinity should avoid the immediate area and should be prepared to adhere to any extraordinary measures introduced by security personnel such as road closures and checkpoints. They should remain extremely vigilant and exercise a heightened state of situational awareness, promptly reporting the observation of any suspicious activity or the discovery of any suspect object to local authorities.

On Friday, June 2nd, 2017, an attacker using an assault rifle and setting a gasoline fire in a resort in Manila, Philippines, killed 37 people and injured many others. Global Alert extends our deepest sympathies to the victims of this attack and their loved ones. The U.S. Department of State has condemned this horrible attack, but has not labeled it as an act of terrorism. This designation by the U.S. government determines whether coverage can apply for trip cancellation or trip interruption due to an act of terrorism.

Tin Leg

On June 2, 2017 (June 1 ET), a gunman fired shots and set fire to gambling tables in a Manila resort, killing more than 30 people.

What you need to know about your policy:
As of June 2, the U.S. Department of State has not officially deemed the incident an act of terrorism, meaning there is no coverage for losses related to the attack for current Tin Leg policyholders.

If the attack is named a terrorist event, there may be coverage for Tin Leg customers to cancel or interrupt their trip. In order to be eligible for these benefits, a Tin Leg policy must have been purchased prior to June 1.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Terrorism:
In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the event must occur on or after the policy’s effective date and must be deemed an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State. It also must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • The terrorist incident must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary.
  • The terrorist attacks result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage, other benefits, including Trip Delay, Emergency Medical, and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to this event.
