In a statement released on October 31, 2017, the US State Department issued a statement addressing October 31, 2017 truck incident in New York City as an act of terrorism.

The October 31, 2017 incident is considered a terrorist attack and falls within the definition in our policies. Please note:

  • Coverage may be afforded under policies purchased prior to the event.
  • As of then, this event is no longer considered unforeseen, so it will not be covered. This guideline applies only to new policies that are effective on or after the event, and covering travel during such time.
  • Terms and conditions may vary by program; please refer to the actual policy. All claims should be examined on their own circumstances and merits.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

The New York City truck attack on Oct 31, 2017 has been classified as a terror attack. To qualify for coverage policies would need to have been purchased prior to 10.31.2017. Below is the coverage wording from the Description of Coverage. A terrorist incident is a named peril under Trip Cancellation/Interruption coverage.

“a Terrorist Incident in a City listed on the Insured’s itinerary within 30 days of the Insured’s scheduled arrival; “

“Coverage would be in effect if purchased prior to 10.31.2017 and if plan included Terrorism as a named peril.”

CSA Travel Protection

Around 3:05pm EST yesterday, a 29-year-old man in a rented pickup truck drove down a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center in Manhattan, New York City. Eight people were killed and almost a dozen injured. After crashing the truck into a school bus, the suspect left the vehicle while displaying imitation firearms and was shot in the abdomen by a police officer, where he was than later taken into custody. A senior law enforcement official has stated that authorities found a note claiming the attack was made in the name of ISIS near the truck used in the attack, however, it is still under investigation. Customers are strongly encouraged to read their Description of Coverage or Insurance Policy for details regarding their available coverage. For plans that do offer coverage for a terrorist act, please note that there is no coverage for this specific event under any plans purchased on or after October 31, 2017.

On October 31, 2017 at approximately 3:00 PM (EST), a man driving a pick-up truck drove into a number of people on a bike path along the West Side Highway in Lower Manhattan, New York, New York, and continued on until striking a school bus with children on board. The suspect was shot and taken into custody by police. At this time the incident is considered to be a lone-wolf terrorist attack. Those in the area should follow instructions issued by local authorities and stay informed of the security situation.

The U.S. Department of State identified this as a terrorist attack, and as such, these tragic events meet the guidelines and requirements for coverage under certain GeoBlue travel medical plans.

Tin Leg

On October 31, 2017, a driver drove a truck onto a busy bicycle path in New York City, killing at least 8 people and injuring multiple others.

What you need to know about your policy:

On October 31, 2017, the U.S. Department of State officially declared the incident an act of terrorism, meaning current Tin Leg policyholders may have coverage to cancel or interrupt their trip due to the attack. In order to be eligible for coverage, a Tin Leg policy must have been purchased prior to October 31.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for terrorism:

In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the event must occur on or after the policy’s effective date and must be deemed at act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State. It must also meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • The terrorist incident must occur within 7 days of your departure and within 50 miles of a city listed on your itinerary
  • The terrorist attack must result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage, other benefits, including Trip Delay, Emergency Medical, and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to this event.
