HTH – Nice Attack Travel Insurance Coverage Position Statement
On Thursday July 14th a truck rammed a crowd during a Bastille Day fireworks display at the Promenade des Anglais, Nice, France. Current reports indicate that at least 84 people have been killed and at least 200 others have been injured. The driver of the vehicle has been killed by security forces. Law enforcement officers have closed off the area to public access while investigations are underway. Reports indicate that the state of emergency initially triggered following the Paris terror attacks in November 2015 has been extended by three months until October 26, 2016. This means France will continue with Operation Sentinel, mobilizing its 10,000-strong additional military force across the country. In light of this development, in-country personnel should anticipate a heightened security presence nationwide which may lead to localized travel disruptions. Furthermore, clients are advised to heed any instructions issued by local authorities.
For TripProtector plan members, as of July 15, 2016, the U.S. Department of State has not officially deemed the incident an act of terrorism, meaning there is no coverage for losses related to this specific act. If deemed an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State we will cover trip cancellation and trip interruption caused by a Terrorist Incident that occurs in a city listed on Your Trip itinerary during the Trip. This same city must not have experienced a Terrorist Incident within the ninety (90) days prior to the Terrorist Incident that is causing the cancellation of Your Trip.
