Please be advised that Hurricane Gert falls within our guidelines, policy terms and conditions as inclement weather and potentially a natural disaster. The NOAA National Hurricane Center upgraded Gert from a tropical storm to a hurricane at 11 PM EDT August 14, 2017. Gert is not expected to make landfall on the US East Cost.

Policies purchased prior to 11pm EDT August 14, 2017 may cover the event. As of then, it’s no longer considered unforeseen, so it will not be covered. For more information on the status of these storms, please refer to: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

Please note:

  • Trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits are not payable if a natural hazard (such as a brushfire, tropical storm, or hurricane) is named on or becomes foreseen before the effective date and time of the policy.
  • This guideline applies only to new policies that are effective on or after the event, and covering travel during such time. It does not apply to new policies that cover travel after the event has passed.
  • Terms and conditions may vary by program; please refer to the actual policy. All claims should be adjudicated on their own circumstances and merits.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

The storm became a named hurricane on 8/14/17. Policies would need to be purchased before 8/14 to qualify for coverage. Benefits will only be paid for losses occurring within 14 days after the named hurricane makes the destination uninhabitable or inaccessible.

CSA Travel Protection

Previous Tropical Storm Gert strengthened into a Hurricane yesterday August 14th. Currently, maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph and Gert is gradually making a turn towards the northeast. It is expected to become a little stronger with an increase in forward speed over the next couple days. Customers are strongly encouraged to read their Description of Coverage or Insurance Policy for details regarding their available coverage. For plans that do offer coverage for adverse weather and natural disasters, please note that there is no coverage for this specific storm under any plans purchased on or after August 14, 2017. Tropical storm “Gert”, the second of the Atlantic hurricane season, surged late Monday, August 14, 2017. The category one hurricane, sustaining winds of up to 75 miles per hour, currently poses no land risk as it tracked over 400 miles west of the island of Bermuda. U.S. forecasters are predicting an “extremely active” hurricane season, with 14-19 storms anticipated for the Atlantic ocean region this year; up to nine of these could develop into hurricanes and up to five of these are expected to be major (Category 3 or higher) with wind speeds of up to 129 miles per hour. Residents and those traveling to the region during hurricane season- typically from June through November- are being urged to follow any directives from local media and authorities, take shelter when inclement weather is approaching and to stay off of coastal or beach areas during any storm or hurricane event.

Tin Leg

On August 13, 2017, Hurricane Gert became a named tropical storm, and the storm developed into the second hurricane of the 2017 season.

What you need to know about your policy:
As of August 13, Hurricane Gert is no longer considered an unforeseen event. Coverage related to the storm is not available for Tin Leg policies purchased after this date.

Tin Leg policies purchased on or prior to August 13 may provide coverage related to the event, including Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption and Trip Delay benefits.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage for Hurricane and Weather:
In order for an event to be covered under Tin Leg policies, the event must occur after the policy has been purchased and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Result in the complete cessation of travel services at the point of departure or destination for the following specified amounts of time:
    • Tin Leg Economy policy: 48 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Standard policy: 24 consecutive hours
    • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Accommodations at your destination are made uninhabitable
  • Your or your traveling companion’s principal place of residence has been rendered uninhabitable
  • A mandatory evacuation is ordered by local authorities at your destination. You must have 50% or less of your trip remaining when the evacuation ends to be eligible for this benefit.

Travel Delay coverage for Hurricane and Weather:
In order for a storm to be covered under the Trip Delay benefit within Tin Leg policies, it must meet the following requirements for minimum length of delay:

  • Tin Leg Economy policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Standard policy: 12 consecutive hours
  • Tin Leg Luxury policy: 6 consecutive hours

In addition to Trip Cancellation and Travel Delay coverage, other benefits, including Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation, may also be available for coverage related to the hurricane.
