Can I have medical coverage if I am pregnant?

Last Updated:

Short Answer

You can still receive Emergency Medical coverage for sickness or injury unrelated to your pregnancy while on your trip. However, anything relating to the pregnancy will generally be excluded from most travel insurance policies.

More Detail

If you are pregnant you can have medical coverage for the cost of treatment associated with a medical emergency unrelated to your pregnancy incurred while traveling. However, most travel insurance policies do not cover normal pregnancy under the Emergency Medical benefit. This includes childbirth and medical expenses related to pregnancy.

There are some policies that provide Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation coverage for complications of pregnancy. However, complications are generally not defined and will be looked at on a case-by-case basis. As each policy is different, we recommend reading through the description of coverage before purchasing the policy.
