The Hurricane and Weather benefit can provide reimbursement for your prepaid and non-refundable trip payments and deposits if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a natural disaster or inclement weather.
Most Trip Cancellation policies provide coverage for a trip that is cancelled or interrupted due to hurricane or weather.
In order for you to be eligible for Hurricane and Weather coverage, you must meet at least one of the policy’s requirements under the Trip Cancellation benefit. The common requirements are: common carrier delay for a specified amount of time, accommodation at the destination made uninhabitable, hurricane warning, and mandatory evacuation of the destination.
“Common carrier delay” typically requires a specific time period to pass before you become eligible under this requirement—typically between 12 and 48 hours. The most lenient policies provide coverage for any delay of a common carrier due to weather that affects transportation.
Policies that provide coverage if your accommodation at your destination is made uninhabitable due to weather require the hotel or other accommodation is damaged or destroyed to the extent you can no longer stay there.
Policies including coverage in the event of a hurricane warning can provide coverage if your home or destination city is under a hurricane warning, typically this warning must be issued by the NOAA National Hurricane Center.
If a policy provides coverage in the event of a “Mandatory evacuation,” this means you can be covered if the local authorities at your destination must order an evacuation.
Some policies state mandatory evacuation and/or hurricane warning is “conditionally covered. “Conditionally covered” means the provider will only cover you if you have 50% or less of your trip remaining.
All policies that include coverage for Hurricane and Weather require you to purchase the policy before the storm is named.
