What is Co-Insurance?

Last Updated:

Short Answer

Co-Insurance is the percentage of eligible medical expenses, after the deductible, that you are responsible for paying.

More Detail

If your policy includes Co-Insurance, the Co-Insurance is the percentage of eligible medical expenses that you are responsible for paying.

Typically, policies with a Co-Insurance will cover 80% of the first $5,000 of medical expenses, then 100% of the expenses over $5,000 up to the medical limit in your policy. This means, you would be responsible for 20% of the first $5,000 of medical expenses.

Policies that do not contain a Co-Insurance clause may offer coverage for 100% of the medical expenses up to the coverage limit.

This information can vary based on the travel insurance policy. Please review the policy certificate to verify coverage.
