What is Travel Delay coverage?

Last Updated:

Short Answer

Travel Delay provides reimbursement for the costs of lodging, meals and local transportation if a trip is unexpectedly delayed for a covered reason. Additionally, many policies including the Travel Delay benefit can provide reimbursement for unused prepaid and non-refundable trip costs, and some can cover the additional costs to catch you up to your destination, or to return home, depending on the policy.

More Detail

Travel Delay provides coverage if you are delayed for a reason that is covered under the policy, and delayed for a minimum number of hours, typically 3, 6, or 12. Mechanical breakdown of a common carrier or inclement weather are the most common covered reasons for Travel Delay.

This benefit provides a daily dollar amount to be used for necessary expenses while you are delayed. This typically ranges between $150-200 per day. Additionally, many policies including this benefit can provide reimbursement for unused, prepaid and nonrefundable trip costs, as well as the additional costs to catch you up to your destination or to return home, depending on the policy.
