What should I look for in my policy if I want coverage for coronavirus?

Last Updated:

Short Answer

Travel insurance policies that offer Coronavirus Cancellation and Coronavirus Medical benefits can provide coverage for contracting the coronavirus (COVID-19).

More Detail

Coronavirus Medical coverage is included within some policies under the Emergency Medical benefit. This benefit is designed to cover treatment specifically for travelers who unexpectedly contract the coronavirus while traveling.

The Coronavirus Cancellation benefit can provide reimbursement for prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you contract coronavirus and cannot travel as planned. Coronavirus Cancellation is included within some policies under the Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits. In order for coverage to apply, you must be medically fit to travel when you purchase their policy.

As the coronavirus pandemic is considered a known event by many travel insurance providers, Trip Cancellation and Emergency Medical benefits relating to the coronavirus outbreak are only available from select travel insurance providers.
