US vacationers are letting their taste buds do the talking when it comes to planning their break, according to new research.

A study by the Travel Industry Association in partnership with Gourmet and the International Culinary Tourism Association found that food and wine were the deciding factors for one in five travelers.

And this has driven a trend in vacation rentals, according to Justin Halloran, the vice president of HomeAway.

He said: “Niche travel is booming because travelers crave authentic experiences tailored to their likes and interests.

“Using homeowners’ advice and home amenities, vacation rentals make it easy for food-lovers to leave the annoying ‘tourist’ label at the door and experience each destination’s unique culture.”

A host of senators in the US are to come together in a bid to boost tourism to the US from Europe and beyond.

As well as providing funding for advertising campaigns in Britain and elsewhere, the money will be used to look into extending visa waivers and making US immigration and customs less arduous for visitors ? good news for those looking to work in the USA.

Promotional material is expected to focus on America’s tourism heavy-hitters, such as New York City, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, theme parks in Florida or the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Travel agents sending visitors heading to any of these attractions will be expected to provide or point out visitor insurance deals.

The senators said that the campaign will mainly be interested in raising visitor numbers from countries that already have a proven enthusiasm for visiting the US.

The six countries that provide the country with the most tourists are the UK, Japan, Germany, France and South Korea.

Visitors to the US should not leave home without visitor insurance.

The demand for talented overseas employees to work in the USA has been highlighted by the fact that Microsoft is planning a development centre north of the border, in Canada.

The software manufacturing giant is a leading recruiter of educated foreigners via the H1B programme and attracts thousands of so-called ‘aliens’ to work in the USA every year.

Founder Bill Gates has been lobbying the Senate for years in a bid to boost the number of H1B visas issued to overseas talent.

This type of permit is particularly useful to the IT industry, as it only applies to foreigners with masters degrees earned in the States.

The latest move by Microsoft sends a thinly-veiled message to senators, drawing attention to the desperate need for IT experts to work in the USA software industry.

Vacationers have been prompted to review their travel insurance before departing on a summer break.

The Independent Insurance Agents of Ohio are reminding travelers that the right travel insurance deal can provide valuable compensation in the event of trip cancellation or interruption, potentially saving vast sums of money that would otherwise be non-refundable.

Travelers are often caught out by unexpected problems, such as their travel operator going bankrupt or a powerful natural disaster. Travel insurance can be a lifeline in these scenarios.

Medical costs for Americans overseas can be astronomical and the right deal will provide invaluable financial protection in the worst-case scenario.

Four in five Americans travel with their cell phones, while one in five bring their laptop, according to a recent AP-Ipsos survey, not to mention iPods, PSPs, cameras and other accessories.

Losing a piece of equipment with personal files or vacation snaps can be heartbreaking, but don’t let it break the bank as well – the right travel insurance deal will cover the cost of your stolen hi-tech toys.

Using Squaremouth‘s online comparison tools, travelers can track down the best travel insurance for them, before tailoring it to their specific needs.

This week is Lightning Awareness Week and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is educating families on the right course of action in an emergency.

Only flooding has killed more Americans during storms over the past 30 years and the importance of preparation and protection cannot be overemphasized.

“Lightning is usually the most dangerous and frequently encountered weather hazard that people experience each year,” reports NOAA warning coordination meteorologist John Jensenius with the National Weather Service.

“Too often people wait too long before seeking safe shelter from a thunderstorm and find themselves caught outside in a very dangerous and sometimes deadly situation.”

NOAA is forecasting one of the worst Atlantic hurricane seasons on record this year and families should remember to invest in suitable travel insurance, even if their vacation is short haul.

This serious message is embodied by the cuddly face of Leon the Lightning Lion, who is reminding children of the dangers.

“When thunder roars, go indoors,” is the message of this year’s campaign and it could save lives, or prevent debilitating problems. People struck by lightning often suffer from long term problems including memory loss, sleeping problems, fatigue, depression and dizziness.

Immigrants who work in the USA and want to become a fully-fledged American citizen will now be involved in an updated naturalisation process.

One hundred new citizens taking part in a naturalisation ceremony at the National Constitution Center this week were the first to watch a short film entitled A Promise of Freedom: An Introduction to US History and Civics for Immigrants.

The 12-minute presentation highlights the important role played by immigrants in modern American society and their past contributions, expounding both the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

“As a nation, we have a responsibility to prepare those who are new to our shores to fully participate in our society and our government,” commented Emilio Gonzalez, director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

“The freedom we enjoy is the promise that citizenship holds for immigrants to the United States.”

Before earning full American citizenship, new arrivals who work in the USA are reminded to secure visitors insurance, which can provide invaluable protection in a number of scenarios.

Well over 41 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this week as Independence Day fever sweeps the nation.

Security has been tightened after foiled car bombings in London and an attack on Glasgow Airport, but this week is still on track to be the busiest Fourth of July vacation period on record.

The threat of terrorism is failing to discourage most travelers, who are determined not to let an extremist minority spoil their long-harbored plans. As many as five million Americans will head for the airport, though most will travel on four wheels.

New York major Michael Bloomberg said that security provisions had been stepped up at the country’s busiest public places in light of the ongoing threat.

“We clearly have ratcheted up a little bit, focusing on those places where we think there might a heightened risk,” he told the Associated Press. “But nobody’s really sure.

“My advice to everybody is to enjoy the weekend.”

The best way to enjoy your journey this week is to invest in suitable travel insurance cover for peace of mind.

Over 4,000 new American citizens will be welcomed to the States in a series of ceremonies to mark the 231st anniversary of the Fourth of July this week.

Staff with the Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) are responsible for the naturalisation of thousands of foreigners who come to work in the USA each year and will be hosting a series of events across the country – and further afield – to embrace its latest arrivals.

Disney World in Orlando will host a concert on July 4th for 1,000 new citizens, while a ceremony in Philadelphia will naturalise more than 100, as the immigration department shows off a debut film for overseas entrants who come to work in the USA.

Around 425 members of the American armed forces, stationed in Iraq, Guam, Germany, Kuwait and South Korea will also be made fully-fledged citizens.

“Citizenship is the most precious gift that our country can bestow upon anyone,” said USCIS director Emilio Gonzalez.

“Today we celebrate the fact that in the USA you can enter the country as an immigrant and in time become as fully an American citizen as the most direct descendants of our founding fathers.”

The USCIS naturalises in excess of 700,000 new Americans each year.

The Fourth of July has arrived and with it the mad rush to escape on vacation for an extended Independence Day break.

Security is tight following the attempted terrorist attacks across the Pond – in London and Glasgow – just as the hurricane season gets into full swing and crowds start to amass in the country’s busiest airports.

Disruption is de rigueur at this time of year, but shrewd vacationers can protect themselves against the likely eventualities with a suitable travel insurance policy.

Warm weather destinations have proved particularly popular this summer due to enticing deals, but the threat of a tropical storm is very real in places such as Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expects between 13 and 17 named storms to sweep across the Atlantic this summer, with as many as five major hurricanes on the same scale as Katrina.

Having your plans ruined by inclement conditions is far from fun, but travel insurance will cost you, on average, just five per cent of overall travel costs and can provide essential protection against illness, injury, losses, damage, delays, cancellations, or unexpected expenses.
