Check The Fine Print as Not All Travel Insurance Would Cover Cruise Passengers Robbed Like Those on St. Kitts, warns

ST PETE BEACH, FL November 22nd, 2010 – Last week, a group of cruise passengers were held up at gunpoint while on tour in St. Kitts.  There were no injuries, but cash, jewelry and cameras were stolen.  Because the trip was interrupted and the travelers were robbed, it might be reasonable to assume this would be covered by any travel insurance policy.  However, some plans have limited or no coverage for travelers who are robbed, warns, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison website.

“Travel insurance plans specifically identify which situations are covered,” advised Squaremouth Chief Executive Chris Harvey. “Look closely at the policy language because some will not cover assault or robbery.”

The robbery in St. Kitts signified an early end to the tour, which could be reimbursed by a policy.  In this instance, all of the passengers returned to the ship on time. If such an event were to cause travelers to miss the departure or warranted an early return home, those travel expenses could also be covered.  Remember, a claim would only be paid if assault is a covered reason in the policy.

The stolen personal belongings could be covered, but some plans restrict benefits to checked luggage only.  Because the travelers in St. Kitts were robbed at gunpoint, the stolen items would not qualify as checked luggage.  Also, no travel insurance will reimburse the loss or theft of money.

This incident has led to other cruise itineraries being re-routed to avoid St. Kitts.  Cruise companies typically do all they can to atone for such a change, which makes a travel insurance claim unnecessary.  If a traveler wants to cancel a cruise because of an itinerary change or fear of a situation like the robbery on St. Kiits, a policy with cancel for any reason coverage is the only option.

“Cancel for any reason is the catch all coverage.” Harvey said. “Travelers can cancel the trip without having to explain why, even if the reason is an itinerary change.”

To qualify for a policy with cancel for any reason, buy it soon after making the first trip payment and remember, a claim won’t pay all of the trip cost.
