ST. PETERSBURG, FL April 16, 2015 – Travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, allows travelers to quote, compare, and purchase travel insurance from every major provider in the US. To further assist customers in their research, Squaremouth has launched the travel insurance provider spotlight series. In this article, Squaremouth shines a light on Trawick International.

Catering to Customer Needs
Trawick International was founded in 1998 with the goal of creating insurance products that would meet and exceed the changing needs of travelers. The company began by providing insurance policies to university students, studying domestically and abroad, and eventually began building and providing travel insurance products to a vast array of clients around the world.

A Variety of Plans with Unique Benefits
Trawick is able to meet an array of customer needs by offering an extensive variety of customizable travel insurance policies. These plans cater to a wide range of customers with affordable Primary Medical coverage, and a unique Pre-Existing Medical Condition benefit. Trawick’s Pre-Existing Condition benefit extends to policies purchased within 30 days of a traveler’s last trip payment. This is unique to the travel insurance industry, as most providers require a policy be purchased within 30 days of the first deposit date in order to include the benefit.

Continuous Customer Service
Trawick customers receive dedicated service around the clock. Before departure, they are assisted through policy changes or cancellations. 24-hour customer support and emergency assistance is available while traveling, and upon their return, Trawick offers guidance through the claims process. These benefits are available to all Trawick International customers worldwide.

“We pledge to provide the travel insurance customers need so they can focus on worry-free travels,” says Jane Pennington, Director of Administration, for Trawick International.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL April 7, 2015 – Travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, allows travelers to quote, compare, and purchase travel insurance from every major provider in the US. To help travelers learn more about these companies, Squaremouth has launched the travel insurance provider spotlight series. In this article, Squaremouth shines a light on HCC Medical Insurance Services.

Online Insurance Frontier
Established in Indianapolis in 1998, HCC Medical Insurance Services (HCCMIS) was one of the first companies to offer emergency medical insurance products and services online. Today, customers can review coverage options, obtain quotes, purchase travel insurance, and receive their documentation electronically 24 hours a day. Also available online, is HCCMIS’ “Client Zone”, an online portal which allows customers to view pre-trip advisories, download an ID card, file a claim, and extend their coverage.

Going Global
In 2002, the Noel Group, LLC bought HCCMIS, adding service offices throughout the world, expanding its product offerings, and transforming its customer service department into a travel insurance and international assistance platform. Six years later, the company was purchased by HCC Insurance Holdings, Inc., further expanding HCCMIS into the brokerage community. Both acquisitions have increased the company’s assets and ratings. Today, HCCMIS has the highest rating of A+ by A.M. Best Company, which rates their financial security.

Creative and Flexible Benefits
HCCMIS owns a syndicate at Lloyd’s of London, positioning them with unique advantages in the marketplace. Among these advantages, is the flexibility it provides in creating new benefits to meet the evolving international travel medical insurance industry. Personal liability, crisis management, and the ability to include additional Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage are a few benefits offered by HCCMIS that are not commonly included in most other travel medical policies.

Advice for International Travelers
“Most individuals with a domestic insurance plan often wonder if they need supplemental coverage while traveling abroad. Our answer is typically ‘yes’,” said Juan Mas, Business Unit Director at HCC. “Most domestic insurance companies will provide limited or no coverage outside of the member’s home country. Travel medical insurance is usually affordable and can protect one’s health and assets during an international adventure.”

ST. PETERSBURG, FL April 3, 2015 – Earlier this week, pilots at Allegiant Air announced their plan to strike, threatening the trips of as many as 186,000 travelers. Unfortunately for Allegiant customers, it is too late to purchase a travel insurance policy to cover the pending strike. Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, answers two major questions about insurance coverage for airline strikes.

Can I Get Coverage for an Airline Strike?
Labor strikes causing flight cancellations are generally covered under standard Trip Cancellation policies. Policies that include this benefit may reimburse a traveler 100% of their nonrefundable trip costs if an airline strike causes their trip to be cancelled.

However, coverage ends once the strike has been announced or reported by the media. Once this occurs, it becomes a foreseeable event, and will be excluded on any policies purchased after the announcement.

“When determining the cutoff date for coverage of a strike, most travel insurance providers go by the date it becomes public knowledge, not the date the strike actually occurs,” explains Squaremouth Director of Marketing, Megan Singh.

In addition to being unforeseen, most travel insurance providers require the strike be organized, announced and sanctioned by a labor union in order to be covered. Some also require it to cause complete cessation of a common carrier for a specific time period before the benefit is triggered, this varies between 12 and 48 hours.

Can I Still Get Coverage if Strikes at my Airline are Common?
German airline, Lufthansa, has been riddled with pilot strikes in recent years. In March of 2015, the airline experienced its 12th walkout in the past 12 months.

In this situation, coverage for future strikes varies depending on the insurance provider. Some will consider future strikes inevitable, thus excluding them, while others will look at each strike as an individual event, and will still provide coverage, regardless of past strike history.

“In the case of Lufthansa pilot strikes, each provider will have their own interpretation if future strikes are ‘foreseeable’,” added Singh. “Some of our providers have already explicitly excluded coverage of this airline due to their strike history, while others have said coverage can still be available.”

ST. PETERSBURG, FL March 31, 2015 – Travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, allows travelers to quote, compare, and purchase travel insurance from every major provider in the US. To help customers learn more about the companies on their website, Squaremouth has launched the travel insurance provider spotlight series. In this article, Squaremouth shines a light on Travelex Insurance Services.

History
Travelex’s history dates back to 1955, when Tele-Trip Insurance, Mutual of Omaha’s travel insurance subsidiary company, began offering travel protection and flight accident plans. In 1996, the Travelex Group purchased Tele-Trip Insurance, founding Travelex Insurance Services. Today, Travelex is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, with sales offices around the country.

The “ExFactor”
Travelex offers an exclusive “ExFactor” advantage, which provides their customers with experienced people, excellent protection plans and exceptional customer care. Combined, these “ExFactors” help provide each Travelex client, customer, and travel agent with a VIP experience.

Travelex’s “excellent protection plans” offer 24-hour coverage for trip cancellations, flight delays, medical emergencies including evacuations and other benefits. Many of the Travelex plans provide First Payer Coverage with no deductible, meaning they will pay first but may recover funds from medical & other collectible insurance plans. In addition, Travelex provides one of the most ‘family friendly’ plans on the market, offering coverage for children under age 21 at no additional charge when accompanied by a covered adult family member.

Classic Plans with a Modern Twist
Travelex has progressed through the evolution of travel insurance products which started as a simple flight accidental death and dismemberment plans, to the broad coverage policies they sell today. The company continues to modify and upgrade their plans to meet the needs of modern leisure travelers, by offering pre-existing medical condition coverage, family friendly kids-free pricing, pet insurance provisions and ‘cancel for any reason’ upgrades.

Personalized Customer Support
Prior to their trip, Travelex customers can rely on the company’s experienced customer solutions representatives’ product and benefit knowledge for help answering real-life scenarios, providing insurance quotes, and processing enrollments.

For assistance after purchase, these representatives are available to expedite policy modifications, from travel date corrections to adding coverage for additional travel components.

During a traveler’s trip, Travelex’s partnership with On Call International provides world-class travel assistance when a need arises. Regardless of a traveler’s location, multilingual assistance is available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Travelex’s customer solution center’s focus is to exceed the expectations of travelers, make travel insurance easy, and treat every customer as a VIP.

“Travelex is extremely proud of the fact we are easy to do business with,” said Michael Ambrose, President of Travelex Insurance Services. “We take the time to make certain every customer receives prompt quality assistance in answering all their questions — our superior service ensures customers keep coming back.”

ST. PETERSBURG, FL March 26, 2015 – In the wake of several recent terrorist attacks, travelers may have growing concerns about their safety. Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, explains what travelers need to know about travel insurance coverage for terrorism before buying a policy.

Terrorism Coverage Still Widely Available
Despite recent attacks tied to terrorist cells, travel insurance policies can still be purchased to include cancellation coverage for future terrorist attacks. However, before an attack is covered, it must meet specific criteria.

In general, an event must meet three major factors to be considered a “terrorist attack” in terms of travel insurance. Most insurance providers require an event be deemed as “terrorism” by the U.S. Department of State or the reasonable local authorities where it took place. In addition, it must have occurred at a time and place that would reasonably impact a traveler’s trip. Generally, this is a city listed on the traveler’s itinerary or within 120 miles of one, and within 30 days of their arrival.

In every case, a travel insurance policy must be purchased prior to the event, in order to have coverage for any losses related to it. If a traveler has purchased a policy prior to a terrorist attack, and the attack meets their policy’s definition of “terrorism”, they may be covered to cancel their trip and be reimbursed 100% of their nonrefundable trip costs.

Costly Coverage for Fear
Some travelers simply want the option to cancel their trip if they are uncomfortable traveling due to recent terrorist attacks or threats. While canceling due to fear is always excluded, some travel insurance policies offer an optional Cancel for Any Reason upgrade, which allows travelers to do just that.

In order to be eligible for this benefit, the policy must be purchased within 21 days of the first deposit date and must insure 100% of the trip cost. This benefit increases the price of the policy by about 40%, and provides up to 75% reimbursement of nonrefundable trip costs.

Despite the hefty price tag, it is the only option for travelers who want the flexibility to cancel out of fear, or if an attack doesn’t meet their policy’s definition of “terrorism”.

“As terrorist attacks become more frequent, we are seeing growing concerns from travelers looking for terrorism coverage,” said Squaremouth Director of Marketing, Megan Singh. “But before travelers jump to purchase a policy with the “terrorism” benefit, we urge them to make sure they really understand what they are covered for.”

To keep travelers up-to-date with travel insurance coverage related to terrorism, Squaremouth launched the Terrorism and Travel Insurance Information Center. This online resource is updated with official provider position statements, answers to frequently asked questions, and current government travel alerts and notices related to terrorist attacks.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL March 24, 2015 – Travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, allows travelers to quote, compare, and purchase travel insurance from every major provider in the US. To further assist customers in their research, Squaremouth has launched the travel insurance provider spotlight series. In this article, Squaremouth shines a light on Seven Corners.

Seven Corners, has been administering travel insurance support from Carmel, Indiana, since 1993. Co-founders, Jim Krampen and Justin Tysdal, founded the company with the goal of creating an international travel insurance company, focused on personalized customer service and high quality products.

A Multitude of Services, All Under One Roof
Seven Corners has grown from a company offering one retail product to a multifaceted, multinational organization providing numerous products and services to a variety of markets worldwide. Seven Corners handles program administration, premium payments, general underwriting, licensed TPA services, claims processing, 24/7 travel assistance services, nurse triage, case management, and international PPO vendor services.

The company aims to set itself apart from other travel insurance providers by offering comprehensive customer assistance. “With just one phone call, you will speak to a live person who can get you the help that you need. Whether it’s a typo on your ID card, finding a doctor in a foreign country, or assistance filing your claim – it’s all done here under one roof,” says Tim Birky, Director of Marketing.

Service That Continues After Purchase
While traveling, customers are supported by Seven Corners’ 24/7 in-house travel assistance department. This service allows travelers to contact the insurance company for assistance finding a doctor, issues resulting from lost passports, help with currency conversion and re-booking flights. The company also offers its services to the customer once their trip is over, allowing ninety days for a claim to be filed, and support in gathering documentation.

Seven Corners recommends that first time customers, and those considering purchasing a policy, speak with a travel insurance expert to find the best policy.

Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, explains the three factors travelers should look for in their policy to determine if they’re covered to cancel their trip.

Who deemed the attack as terrorism?
Before an attack can be covered under the Terrorism benefit, most travel insurance policies require it to be deemed an official act of terror by the U.S. Department of State. However, some will exclude coverage for any attack if there is an active U.S. travel warning in the destination where it occurred.

“It is not enough for a violent attack to take place, or for a terrorist cell to be suspected of carrying out the attack,” explains Squaremouth Product Manager, Adam Rusin. “It must be officially declared a terrorist attack by reasonable Government bodies.”

Where did the attack occur?
In order for an event to meet the travel insurance definition of “Terrorism”, it must take place in a location that would reasonably impact a traveler. Most policies require the attack to occur either in a city listed on the traveler’s itinerary, or within a specified distance from their destination. This varies between 1 and 120 miles.

When did the attack occur?
100% of travel insurance providers require the policy be purchased before the terrorist attack occurs. It must also take place within a stated number of days from the traveler’s arrival at their destination.

“Of the 55 policies on our website that cover terrorism, most require the attack to occur within 30 days of the traveler’s arrival,” adds Rusin.

Prior to the March 18th shootings at the Bardo museum, there was no U.S. Government-issued travel warning for Tunisia. This means, travelers who have already purchase a travel insurance policy, and whose policy classifies the shootings as terrorism, may be covered to cancel their trip.

To keep travelers informed about travel insurance coverage for terrorist activity, Squaremouth launched the Terrorism and Travel Insurance Information Center. This webpage is updated as official travel insurance provider position statements, FAQs and travel warnings become available.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL March 17, 2015 – Travel insurance may be a smart investment for travelers, but depending on the policy, it can also be a significant additional cost. Fortunately for those who have second thoughts about their policy, most come with a Money Back Guarantee period. Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, explains how travelers can get their money back if they change their mind about an insurance policy.

Money Back Guarantee: How it Works
90% of travel insurance policies on squaremouth.com come with a Money Back Guarantee or “free look period”, during which a traveler can decide whether or not the policy they purchased is right for them. This time frame typically lasts up to 14 days following the purchase date, or until the traveler starts their trip, whichever is sooner. Some policies, however, allow the traveler to cancel their policy up until their departure date.

The Money Back Guarantee comes at no additional expense. During this window, most providers offer 100% reimbursement, however some hold back a cancellation or administration fee.

Money Back Guarantee: Terms by Provider
While the Money Back Guarantee is standard across most travel insurance, the terms differ by policy. To help travelers find the one that best fits their needs, Squaremouth has compiled a list of their products, organized by Money Back Guarantee timeframes.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL March 12, 2015 – Travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, allows travelers to quote, compare, and purchase travel insurance from every major provider in the US. To help travelers learn more about these companies, Squaremouth has launched the travel insurance provider spotlight series. In this article, Squaremouth shines a light on April USA.

History of April Travel Protection
In 1988, The April Group was founded by Bruno Rousset in Lyon, France. 26 years later, the company expanded into the North American market, launching April Travel Protection’s USA division in 2013. April’s international headquarters remain in Lyon, France, while the North American headquarters are in Miami, Florida.

Rousset’s vision for the company was to “change the image of insurance”, a concept that is still reflected in April’s identity today. To maintain this mission, April has taken steps to differentiate itself from competitors.

What’s Different About April?
April offers unique “Stress Less” benefits, through which they instantly adjudicate issues policyholders may experience while traveling. Common issues that qualify for this benefit are delayed and cancelled flights, unexpected hotel stays, and medical emergencies and evacuations. Through the Stress Less process, April resolves the issue immediately, often providing on-the-spot payment, allowing the customer to avoid the claims process when they return home.

April is able to provide Stress Less benefits through their Global Travel Assistance Network, which consists of strategically placed emergency assistance offices around the world. This is an advantage as it allows April to control their customer’s experience throughout their trip, as opposed to outsourcing these services.

April’s Advice for Travelers
April USA’s CEO, Jason Schreier, advises first time travel insurance buyers to speak to an expert in the industry, “On the web, policies can look extremely similar to one another. The differences are often in the fine print that most people don’t read or understand.” Adding, “a great place for first-time buyers to check is aggregator sites. These give them broad view of the market and can help find a price or plan that works for their specific needs.”

Thank You Campaign Final Winner

A server at 3 Daughters Brewing won $10,000 in a competition highlighting local customer service. Squaremouth, the online travel insurance company, sponsored the “Thank You Campaign” that started in December with 20 customer service providers receiving $1,000 each as a tip.

From those 20, Melissa Wolf, a 3 Daughters bartender, was chosen to win the grand prize. The community voted online and Squaremouth representatives made secret visits to check out the contenders.

Wolf, who has Crohn’s disease, has had six surgeries in two years. She will use the prize money to pay medical bills and take her daughter to visit her grandfather in Colorado.

“This act of kindness makes me want to pay it forward,” she said. Squaremouth also gave 3 Daughters $1,000 to share among other employees.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL February 23, 2015 – The measles virus has spread to 15 states, with most cases stemming from one of the most popular destinations in the world, Disneyland. While health officials urge travelers to get vaccinated, those with children too young may be concerned about exposing them to the contagious virus. Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, explains the coverage available for travelers concerned about contracting measles.

Travel Insurance for the Unvaccinated
Currently, all 21 providers and 129 products on squaremouth.com provide coverage for travelers who are concerned about contracting the measles virus before or during their trip.

If a traveler contracts measles while on vacation, the Emergency Medical benefit covers hospitalization and treatment costs, while Medical Evacuation covers transportation costs to the nearest adequate medical facility. Under the Trip Cancellation benefit, travelers who contract the virus before their departure may be able to cancel their trip and receive reimbursement for the prepaid and nonrefundable trip expenses that went unused.

No Qualifications for Coverage
Despite the vaccination debate, travel insurance providers do not require travelers be vaccinated in order to be covered. Children as early as 14 days can be insured under a policy, 12 months before they are eligible for the measles vaccine.

Travel insurance benefits for measles will remain available unless the outbreak worsens, causing it to become declared as an epidemic or pandemic. At that point, some travel insurance providers may consider contracting it as foreseeable and exclude it from coverage under their policies.

“Travel insurance can’t make a traveler immune to measles,” says Squaremouth Director of Marketing, Megan Singh, “but it can offer peace of mind and financial support to travelers, especially parents, who are concerned about their young children contracting the contagious virus.”

ST. PETERSBURG, FL February 19, 2015 – Friday the 13th was a lucky day for one local server in St. Petersburg. Instead of receiving a 20% tip, Melissa Wolf, a bartender at 3 Daughters Brewing, was surprised with a giant check for $10,000. This was the final stage of a three-month initiative by local company Squaremouth, to thank outstanding customer service providers in St. Petersburg.

Squaremouth launched the Thank You Campaign in December. For two months, they searched for twenty exceptional customer service providers around their downtown St. Petersburg headquarters. Those who went above and beyond for their customers received a plain black envelope containing $1,000 in cash.

“It was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve had,” said Melissa, about receiving the $1,000 surprise. “Such generosity and the act of incredible kindness from a complete stranger is such an amazing gift to receive.”

Other recipients included a waitress in nursing school, a bartender hoping to open her own bakery, and an oyster shucker who recently welcomed his third son.

After all twenty recipients were chosen, Squaremouth asked the community to vote for their favorite recipient. This vote, coupled with the original experience and secret subsequent visits secured Melissa as the winner.

The $10,000 surprise took place during Melissa’s shift at 3 Daughters Brewing on February 13th. On behalf of the city of St. Petersburg, Mayor Rick Kriseman joined Squaremouth to present the checks, one for Melissa, and another $1,000 check made out to 3 Daughters Brewing to be shared amongst their employees.

“This act of kindness makes me want to pay it forward and hopefully I can one day give an amazing gift to a stranger, like Squaremouth has done for me. You have helped me have a better life and I am eternally grateful,” said Melissa, who plans to use the money to pay medical bills and take her daughter to visit her grandfather in Colorado.

Squaremouth.com allows travelers to research, compare and buy travel insurance. The company has built a legacy of providing exceptional service, being recognized as one of the country’s best customer services teams by the American Business Awards in 2014. This focus on exceptional service inspired the Thank You Campaign, recognizing others in a tourism environment who go above and beyond for their customers.

Read about Melissa’s story and watch her $10,000 surprise on Squaremouth’s Thank You Campaign website: https://thankyoucampaign.squaremouth.com/melissa-wolf/.

St. Petersburg, Florida — It may not be the Powerball Jackpot but a surprise $10,000 check to one St. Petersburg server will go a long way.

Back in December, single mom Melissa Wolf was chosen as an “exceptional service provider” by the travel insurance company Squaremouth.

As a surprise, she, as well as 19 other local servers in the St. Pete area, got $1,000 in cash!

Melissa is recently back to work after a 2-month recovery from her 6th surgery in the past 2 years. Melissa has Crohn’s Disease. A week after she received the $1,000, she visited a world-renown surgeon in New York with hopes of a future without an ileostomy bag. Her young daughter, Willow, is her inspiration. The first $1,000 was able to pay her rent while she was out of work.

Despite Melissa’s personal story, her customer service has been incredible – everyone who enters 3 Daughters becomes her friend, and her attitude is contagious.

That’s why community members voted for her to receive the grand prize — $10,000!

It almost left her speechless.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL February 16, 2015 – A month following the terrorist attacks in Paris, a shooter in Copenhagen has killed two, injured five and stunned a nation. Although the suspected gunman has been killed, weary travelers may still fear visiting this or other popular European destinations. Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, explains why coverage for fear can be costly.

Fear Is Not Typically Covered
Standard Trip Cancellation policies cover travelers who cancel for reasons out of their control, like an unexpected illness or death in the family. While terrorism is also commonly covered, canceling out of fear is not.

In order for a traveler to be covered to cancel for reasons related to Copenhagen, their policy must include terrorism coverage, and the attack in Copenhagen must meet their policy’s definition of terrorism.

“Although the event that sparks fear may be out of the traveler’s control, it must also fall under one of their policy’s covered reasons,” explains Squaremouth co-founder and CEO, Chris Harvey. “If it doesn’t, the traveler can still cancel their trip, but it is unlikely that they will be reimbursed by their travel insurance provider.”

Costly Coverage for Fear
There is one saving grace for travelers who want the ability to cancel out of fear, but with this additional coverage comes a higher price tag.

Cancel for Any Reason is an optional upgrade that increases the cost of a travel insurance policy by about 40%. Travelers who pay for this additional benefit can cancel for any reason, including fear, and be reimbursed up to 75% of their trip cost, as long as they cancel at least two days before their scheduled departure.

Why the high price tag?

“By giving travelers the option to cancel for any reason at all, the travel insurance provider is taking on much more risk,” explains Harvey.

In order to be eligible for Cancel for Any Reason, the policy must be purchased within 30 days from the first trip payment and 100% of the trip cost must be insured. Of the 129 products currently live on squaremouth.com, 20 include the Cancel for Any Reason upgrade.

“We typically don’t recommend paying more for Cancel for Any Reason unless a traveler’s specific concerns aren’t covered,” adds Harvey. “However, for those specifically concerned about the unpredictability of international travel, paying more for this type of coverage may be worth the price.”

ST. PETERSBURG, FL February 13, 2015 – As New England prepares for another blizzard, city officials are bracing for a new threat: roofs collapsing under the weight of record snowfall.

Travelers who are already away may not be able to protect their houses, but those with a travel insurance policy may have help getting home. Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, explains how travel insurance can bring home travelers whose homes are damaged by the blizzard.

The Unknown Benefit for Travelers Whose Homes are Damaged by the Blizzard
Massachusetts governor, Charlie Baker, expressed the growing concern, saying, “We are starting to worry about roofs which are under tremendous stress from the last few days.”

While many people believe travel insurance can only be applied to a situation that occurs in a foreign destination, most policies extend coverage to specific situations that occur back home. Extreme damage to a traveler’s home is one of those situations.

“Almost every Trip Cancellation policy on our website includes coverage for travelers whose residence becomes uninhabitable by a natural disaster,” explains Squaremouth co-founder and CEO, Chris Harvey.

Travelers whose homes become uninhabitable, may be eligible to file a claim under the Trip Interruption benefit to end their trip early and return home. Trip Interruption covers up to 150% of the cost of the trip. Under this benefit, travelers may be reimbursed for their unused trip expenses, as well as last minute airfare to return home.

Unfortunately for travelers who haven’t purchased a policy, it is too late to get coverage for any losses related to the storm. In order to be eligible for this benefit, travelers must have purchased a policy before the “Valentine’s Day” blizzard, Winter Storm Neptune, was named.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL February 9, 2015 – Winter Storm Marcus has been blamed for over 15,000 cancelled flights. Travelers who have already purchased a travel insurance policy may have some relief, but for those who waited, it is already too late. Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, explains the best way to get coverage for a winter storm.

When to Purchase a Policy for Winter Storm Coverage
Winter Storm Marcus was the fourth named winter storm in the U.S. in the last two weeks. The date which a storm is named is extremely important in terms of travel insurance coverage. Once a storm is named, it becomes excluded on any travel insurance policy purchased after that date. This means any losses related to that storm, including costs related to cancelled or delayed flights, aren’t covered.

“There is a lesson to be learned by the thousands of cancelled and delayed flights this season,” said Squaremouth Director of Marketing, Megan Singh. “Coverage for weather is time-sensitive. If a traveler is specifically concerned with weather impacting their trip, we recommend purchasing a policy soon after their trip is booked. This will give them the best chance at getting the coverage they are looking for.”

Travel Insurance Coverage for Winter Storm Marcus
On Friday, February 6th, The Weather Channel officially named Winter Storm Marcus. Travelers who purchased a policy before this date may be able to utilize travel insurance benefits, including Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption, for flights cancelled or delayed for long periods of time, as well as Travel Delay and Missed Connection, for flights delayed for shorter periods of time.

Unfortunately, those who waited to purchase a policy until February 6th, will not have coverage for any of Winter Storm Marcus’ effects on their trip.

FORT WAYNE, IN February 6, 2015 – Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, has been named a nominee in TechPoint’s 16th Annual Mira Awards for their software development office in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The Mira Awards recognize the best in technology in Indiana. Nominees were chosen by more than 40 subject matter experts. This is Squaremouth’s first nomination in both the Tech Services and Emerging Tech Company of the Year categories.

“We are proud to be part of the budding technology community in Indiana, and are honored to have been recognized by TechPoint among so many other innovative companies,” said Squaremouth co-founder and CIO, Matt Outten.

In 2014, Squaremouth’s development team worked on 17 open source projects, made over 2,200 software changes, launched two online help centers, and supported a high profile marketing campaign.

“Our development team is made up of extremely skilled and motivated individuals,” adds Squaremouth co-founder and CEO, Chris Harvey. “They are able to think two steps ahead of our industry, building and maintaining a website that is able to sustain our growing customer base.”

The development team’s improvements to squaremouth.com have supported the company’s consistent growth of at least 20% year-over-year. In 2014, the website saw over 800,000 visitors, selling over $14 million in premium.

This nomination is the most recent in a line of national recognition Squaremouth has received. In 2014, Squaremouth was awarded with a Silver Stevie Award for Customer Service Team of the Year by the American Business Awards, and was named on the INC 5000 Fastest-Growing Privately Held U.S. Companies for the second consecutive year.

The winners in each category of the Mira Awards will be announced during a black-tie awards banquet in Indianapolis in May 2015. A full list of finalists can be found here: http://techpoint.org/2015-techpoint-mira-awards-nominees/.

Dismore brings over 25 years of industry experience to Squaremouth, including serving as Chief Operating Officer of a leading travel insurance company.

Dismore’s primary responsibility will be to oversee the development of Squaremouth’s travel insurance subsidiary, Tin Leg, including transitioning its administration and claims services from a third-party to in-house.

In its first year, Tin Leg was the top-selling product on squaremouth.com, selling over $4 million in premium in 2014.

“We are very proud of Tin Leg’s early success,” said Squaremouth co-founder and CEO, Chris Harvey. “We believe Bill’s expertise in building and growing travel insurance companies will be an invaluable asset to the continued growth of both Tin Leg and Squaremouth.”

Chris Harvey’s travel insurance software company Squaremouth is known as a cool place to work in St. Petersburg. With unlimited paid vacation, free flowing beer, and mandatory birthday bonuses that must be spent at a bar or restaurant, Harvey has managed to make what some may assume is a boring industry into something fun. Every time Harvey posts a job opening he receives more than 300 applications.

But building the 26-employee, $14 million “cool” company didn’t happen overnight. In fact, the company spent its first five years virtually penniless, according to Harvey. In an industry that’s growing, it’s tough to predict what’s around the corner, other than just assuming the same 10% to 15% growth that it has experienced in the past.

Squaremouth provides a comparison tool for travel insurance products. There are 100 different product offerings, from 20-something insurance companies, and Squaremouth receives a commission based on the product sold. Over the last 30 days, the site has had about 90,000 visitors. With steady growth in sales and staff, Harvey says his goal is to reach $1 million in revenue per employee.

When they started the company, Harvey and his founding partner had experience in building and selling billing software for insurance. But they wanted to find a product that didn’t require an 18-month sales cycle, which is how they came up with travel insurance.

“Travel insurance is the easiest insurance you can imagine,” Harvey says. That’s because unlike other insurances, when you make the decision to buy, you don’t have to wait for underwriting. Travel insurance has no post-sale underwriting. “You just take the credit card and complete the sale,” Harvey says.

When the company was founded in 2001, there were only about six major travel insurance companies. The duo spent the first two years writing the software. In 2003, they launched Quotetravelinsurance.com. By 2005, they scrapped the whole thing and launched a new site, Squaremouth, with their personal finances. Despite earning $1 million in sales in 2006, Harvey found himself within one month of running out of money. Luckily, March 2007 was the first month the company broke even.

In 2009, the company grew to three people and they opened an office. “It took a long time to reach that tipping point,” Harvey says. The company relies mostly on word of mouth as a form of advertising. It also invests in Google Adwords and search engine optimization. “It takes a long time for word of mouth to spread and SEO to kick in,” he adds.

Other forms of advertising would be a waste of money, according to Harvey, because the market the firm is trying to hit is so well defined. It targets only those people who purchased a big trip in the last few weeks.

The company’s target market is over age 50, with a hot spot between 60 and 70 years old. People in this group tend to see the value in travel insurance because they know there’s a possibility of a medical emergency or potential mishap. “The younger you are the more invincible you feel,” Harvey says. Plus, usually the travelers who purchase a policy from Squaremouth are going on a more expensive trip, so there is more investment to protect.

The company also uses data from its systems to design new products. Last year it introduced its first insurance offering (Tinleg), designed from 10 years of data of what people were looking for in travel insurance. It became the top-selling product in one year.

Part of what makes the company unique is its work environment. “We strip away rules and regulations” that most big companies have, Harvey says. For pay raises, employees pick someone to be their pay raise committee. Everybody knows how much everybody earns and everybody votes on the raise. “All of our books are wide open,” he adds.

One of the company’s core values is “f*** it up.” When someone makes a mistake, they announce it, Harvey says. “You embrace it, laugh it off, move on and learn.”

The company does enforce some rules, though. For example, you can never sit in the same desk two days in a row, Harvey says. This helps promote a close-knit team.

As the company continues its climb, Harvey’s biggest challenge is managing growth. “Every year it’s new,” Harvey says. “I’ve never run a $14 million company; I’m stumbling in the dark.”

Travelex: “To help expedite the service process caused by these flight cancellations, here are a few tips for you and your clients.

For travelers who have not yet departed on their trip:

  • Encourage travelers to contact their airline or travel supplier first, as most airlines have issued waivers allowing travelers to re-book their reservation without a change fee.

For travelers who are currently experiencing a trip interruption or delay:

  • Advise travelers that it is beneficial to work with their original airline first, to see how they can be re-accommodated.
  • Travelex’s Travel Assistance provider may contact the airline on the traveler’s behalf while the customer is waiting. If the traveler is standing in line at the airport, we do not suggest that the traveler get out of line.
  • Travelex Assistance will always offer to investigate alternative flights as a possible solution. However, the traveler will be advised any new flight purchased would be an out of pocket expense which may be reimbursable after filing a claim, depending on the policy provisions.”

Full statement from Travelex

ST. PETERSBURG, FL January 26, 2015 – Travelers who are away from home are unable to prepare for the looming nor’easter. While travel insurance can’t protect their houses from the blizzard, it may be able to bring them home. Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, reveals a little-known travel insurance benefit that can help travelers whose homes are damaged by the Northeast blizzard.

Travel Insurance Coverage if Your Home is Damaged by the Blizzard
Of the 132 policies live on squaremouth.com, 55 include Trip Cancellation coverage. Almost every one of these covers travelers whose residence becomes uninhabitable by a natural disaster, including a blizzard. This benefit can cover the cost for the traveler to return home, as well as any trip expenses that went unused because of their early return.

“Most people think travel insurance is just for those whose flights have been cancelled. In this case, it can also help travelers who are trying to get back home,” explains Megan Singh, Squaremouth’s Director of Marketing.

Major concerns include bursting pipes caused by freezing temperatures and collapsing roofs under pounds of snow. Those with a travel insurance policy, whose homes experience such damage, can turn to the their policy for help getting home.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL January 26, 2015 – Travelers in the Northeast are at the mercy of a “crippling and potentially historical blizzard”, already blamed for over 4,000 cancelled flights. While there is no doubt the blizzard will have damaging effects, those with travel insurance policies may not be at a total loss. Squaremouth, America’s fastest growing travel insurance comparison site, explains how travelers can use their travel insurance policy if their plans are ruined by the blizzard.

How to File a Trip Cancellation Claim
Most Trip Cancellation policies cover flights that are cancelled due to weather, including blizzards. Once a flight is officially cancelled, travel insurance policyholders can file a claim to be reimbursed for the cost of the flight, and any other trip expenses they insured.

Travelers whose flight isn’t officially cancelled, but is delayed for an extended period of time, may also be covered. In order for the Trip Cancellation benefit to kick in, the flight must be delayed for an extended period of time, typically between 12 – 48 hours. Once this time frame passes, the traveler should contact their provider to begin the claim process.

How to File a Travel Delay Claim
While airports in the Northeast will be the hardest hit by the blizzard, the ripple effect will likely be felt in the following days throughout the country. If a traveler’s delay isn’t long enough to trigger the Trip Cancellation benefit, they may still be covered under the Travel Delay or Missed Connection benefits.

Once they meet their policy’s specified amount of time, travelers can file a claim to be reimbursed for necessary costs, like food and lodging, while they were delayed. Travelers whose delay causes them to miss a connection may also be able to file a claim for the transportation costs to catch them up to their trip.

With more impacts on travel expected, a travel insurance claim may be the only saving grace for travelers with a policy.
