How to Fill Gaps with Travel Insurance

Travel insurance protects you from losing the money you’ve poured into a trip. Trip cancellation insurance reimburses you for what you lose in non-refundable, prepaid deposits. The key is that your reason for canceling has to be covered by the policy, such as a hurricane that hits your destination before you go.

Illness is also a valid reason for trip cancellation, but to be covered in case you get Covid you’ll want to make sure you buy one of the travel insurance plans that cover Covid.

Travel insurance can cover the non-refundable partial deposit you’ve already made plus the balance you’re still on the hook for, notes Steven Benna, a spokesperson for Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison provider.

If you’re traveling outside the U.S, you’ll want a travel insurance plan with coverage for medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation.

“Domestic health insurance plans are generally not accepted by overseas health care providers and travelers may have to pay for their care out of their pocket if they don’t have travel insurance,” Durazo explains.

In addition to tour deposits, trip cancellation coverage can reimburse you for other non-refundable expenses you’ve already paid, such as airfare and hotel accommodations.

Aside from a travel insurance policy, Benna points out you might have built-in coverage on the credit card you used to book the tour. Check with your credit card company, as not all cards offer this perk.

For the ultimate travel insurance for cancellations there’s an add-on called cancel for any reason coverage. This doesn’t tie you down to a reason listed in the policy. You can make a trip cancellation claim no matter what the reason.
