ITIJ, Sept 8, 2020 – Squaremouth data shows Americans plan to travel internationally in 2021

Last Updated:

According to data based on all travel insurance policies purchased through Squaremouth.com between 12 March and 15 August, a majority of Americans have planned international trips for the beginning of 2021. International destinations account for 86 per cent of all planned trips in January and February 2021 – and about 65 per cent of all trips booked this year for 2021, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, are to international destinations.

US no longer top destination for travel

Most international trips are booked to destinations that are already accessible to Americans. Mexico is the most popular international destination in the new year, replacing the US as the top destination for the first time since Covid-19 began. Caribbean countries make up the remaining top five international destinations – the Bahamas, US Virgin Islands, Aruba, and Jamaica.

Kasara Barto, PR Manager for Squaremouth, commented: “After Covid-19 ground international travel to a halt in 2020, Squaremouth has seen that Americans have a pent up desire to travel abroad. Current travel restrictions are impacting travellers’ destination choices, as the majority of international trips are booked to destinations already accessible to Americans, including Mexico and the Caribbean islands.”
