“This act of kindness makes me want to pay it forward and hopefully I can one day give the love and an amazing gift to a stranger like Squaremouth has done for me. You have helped me have a better life and I am eternally grateful!”
A week ago today, December 9th, I was working at one of my jobs, 3 Daughters Brewing, which is owned by one of the most amazing men in the world, Mike Harting, who makes it a true pleasure to be a part of his business. During my shift on this evening I had a few friends come up to see me along with my beautiful daughter, Willow. A lovely girl walked up and sat next to one of my friends and introduced herself as Holly, I told her it was a pleasure to meet her and then asked what she would like to drink. Her reply was definitely not what I was expecting. Holly said, “Actually I came here because I work for a company named Squaremouth and we are doing a campaign to recognize incredible customer service in the hospitality business. We have come here a few times and you have served us and have always been wonderful to us”. At this point I’m starting to blush a bit and I look over at my daughter and best friends like, “is this for real?” Holly proceeds to hand me an envelope and says this is just something to show our appreciation to your excellent customer service. Now at this point I’m not blushing a bit, I’m in total shock and I start sweating profusely as she tells me to open it. I thought wow just the recognition is amazing in itself and now they are giving me a card as well, so sweet. I open the card and to my complete surprise there are ten $100 dollar bills inside! My daughter comes around the bar and hugs me, my friends along with the entire tasting room are applauding and it was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve had. Such generosity and the act of incredible kindness from a complete stranger is such an amazing gift to receive.
Now what makes this experience even more incredible is that I was gifted with this a week ago and what Squaremouth doesn’t know is that today I am in New York City preparing for a very serious surgery that will have been my 6th surgery in 2 years, and I will be out of work recovering for at least a month. This $1000 will help me to be able to pay my bills and feed my daughter while I am out of work. It has lightened my level of stress and anxiety which is huge to have a little piece of mind through all of the craziness that comes along with this surgery. I feel like the luckiest person ever!
In November of 2012 I had my entire large intestine removed along with a bit of my small intestine due to an acute case of ulcerative colitis. This surgery saved my life and at the same time left me with an ileostomy bag. I was out of work for four months in recovery. After going back to work for about 5 months I had two more surgeries to have the ileostomy reversed and no longer have a bag. It didn’t take, I became extremely ill. I couldn’t keep any weight on, I went down to weighing 79 pounds, I had to walk with a cane, I was in incredible pain. I am a 36 year old, single mom with the most amazing daughter in the world and it would take everything out of me to be able to help her get dressed or make her breakfast, lunch and dinner, let alone be able to just do normal things like going for a walk was nearly impossible without me collapsing to the ground after about 15 steps. I went through this from Sept 2013 until December 22, I was then admitted back into the hospital where they had to do another emergency surgery to once again give me a ileostomy bag. I spent Christmas and New Years in the hospital. After leaving the hospital it took me another two months to recover before I was finally, after nearly six months, able to return to work.
My quality of life, although I love life and all of the people in it that make my life so beautiful, has been challenging with a bag. I am unable to do all that I would like with my daughter and just a simple shower is not as easy as it used to be. I have managed and am grateful for every breath that I take. I am grateful for all the beautiful people that I have in my life. I am grateful to be able to work in an industry where I have contact and meet incredible individuals everyday. I have now been given an opportunity to once again have a reversal surgery by a world renowned surgeon in NYC and I am walking into this surgery knowing that the universe is on my side. I have so much to live for and I appreciate Chris Harvey the CEO of Squaremouth for being one of my angels to show me that everything is going to be alright. I will make it through this and be able to recover quickly and not have to be out of work for another six months and I have years ahead of me to enjoy life with my sweet Willow Sky and the rest of my family and friends and all the new individuals that I will cross paths with during my life.
This act of kindness makes me want to pay it forward and hopefully I can one day give the love and an amazing gift to a stranger like Squaremouth has done for me. You have helped me have a better life and I am eternally grateful!
