Many travel insurance plans have benefits of coverage that include family members and traveling companions. Most notably are trip cancellation and trip interruption. This benefit provides coverage for a sickness, injury or death of the traveler, a traveling companion or a family member. Each plan defines family member specifically, but most are very generous in the definition. Typically, family member includes most relatives except cousins. More importantly, some plans will only cover if the sickness, injury or death is of a relative within the U.S. or Canada. This information is clearly listed in the coverage definitions of family member in the certificate of insurance. Always refer to the certificate of insurance for details.
