Civil Unrest in Egypt and Travel Insurance

Last Updated:

The recent civil unrest in Cairo and throughout Egypt has many travelers asking how travel insurance would cover the situation.  Whether traveling currently, preparing to travel soon or planning a future trip, it is important to review the certificate of insurance and check with the insurance carrier to understand what a policy covers.

The following is a list of coverage benefits that can apply in a situation like the civil unrest in Egypt.

Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation coverage is specifically designed to help during a crisis of political or civil unrest.  This benefit will transport a traveler from a place of danger to a nearby place of safety.  The following carriers offer plans with this coverage:

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption is only available if it is for a covered reason written in the policy.  Civil unrest and riots are commonly excluded from coverage, which means the situation in Egypt is not a covered reason to cancel a trip.  However, Travelex plans allow a trip to be cancelled if a delay lasts for at least 50% of the trip.  Other than that, the only way to cancel a trip and have a claim paid is with Cancel For Any Reason coverage.

Travel Delay reimburses costs of hotels, food and taxis during a delay.  This benefit is only applicable if the delay lasts for a set amount of time, anywhere from 5 to 24 hours.  The following carriers have plans that cover Travel Delay because of civil unrest or rioting:

Missed Connection covers the costs of catching up to the trip if a departure is missed. Similar to Travel Delay coverage, this normally requires a delay last for a set amount of time, from 3 to 12 hours.  Look closely at different plans, as some only cover a missed cruise or tour departure, not a missed flight connection.  The following carriers have plans that cover Missed Connection for a riot or civil unrest:

Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation coverage is only available if civil unrest or riots are not listed in the policy exclusions.  Emergency Medical covers the cost of treatment while Medical Evacuation covers the cost of medical transportation.  The following policies do not exclude civil unrest or riots, which means coverage is available:

Last, it is important to understand that when a current event is considered foreseeable, a new policy will not cover that event.  Learn more about how each travel insurance carrier is addressing the situation in Europe by reading Carrier Position Statements on Civil Unrest in Egypt.
