Travel insurance plans cover the traveler from their home, through the trip and back to their home with a set departure and return date. Once the trip has begun, most plans will not allow the dates of travel to be changed on the policy. If the traveler extends their trip, but the travel insurance is set to expire before the new return date, then they should get an international medical insurance quote. International medical insurance can have a start and end date that are not based on the actual travel dates. This type of insurance does not provide the same comprehensive coverage for travel related benefits, such as trip cancellation or trip interruption. However, there is coverage for emergency medical & dental and medical evacuation & repatriation. International medical insurance also requires that the travel be outside of the home country, and unrelated travelers must have separate policies. Always refer to the certificate of insurance for details.
