North Korea is reportedly deploying troops, artillery, and tanks near Pyongyang in preparation for a possible massive military parade to mark key national events in late 2010, South Korea’s defense ministry said on August 24th. The buildup reportedly began in mid-July and is believed linked to the Workers’ Party meeting in September 2010 and the 65th anniversary of the party’s founding in October 2010.
In other news, South Korean forces are practicing a war plan during joint military drills with the U.S. envisioning occupying and stabilizing North Korea, local media said on August 24th.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s defense minister, Kim Tae-young, pledged that Seoul would retaliate immediately under new guidelines issued to South Korean troops should North Korea fire across the dispute sea border, reports indicated. The new directive overruled previous guidelines requiring South Korean troops to issue warnings three times before opening fire.
