Thousands of vehicles remained stranded on August 23rd as a more than 100km (62 mile) traffic jam leading to Beijing entered its ninth day, with more than 400 police officers dispatched to maintain order and budding entrepreneurs setting up water and food stands, state-run media reported. The Beijing-Tibet expressway slowed to a crawl on August 14th due to sharp increases in cargo-bearing heavy trucks in Beijing and by road maintenance work. An estimated 650,000 new vehicles appear on Beijing’s roads annually.
