Pregnancy and Travel Insurance

Published by May 8, 2009

All travel insurance policies list exclusions and conditions that apply to coverage.  Most carriers identify normal pregnancy or resulting childbirth in those exclusions. This means that there would be no coverage for medical expenses or for cancellation or interruption.    However, unforeseen complications of pregnancy or high risk pregnancy are both considered covered reasons for medical coverage, and potentially cancellation or interruption, as well.

Some policies from Travel Insured International and  Elvia Travel Insurance extend aspects of cancellation coverage for the traveler’s pregnancy or  a family member’s childbirth so long as the pregnancy occurred after the policy was purchased.  For details, always refer to the individual certificates of insurance for Travel Insured International and Elvia Travel Insurance.

International medical insurance policies will not cover pregancy, whether it is considered normal or high risk.  If you have questions or would like more information, call Squaremouth at 1-800-240-0369.
