Statement from Travel Guard on the Spirit Airlines Strike

Published by May 17, 2010

Travel insurance companies release position statements when current events affect coverage.  For those comparing travel insurance and traveling on Spirit Airlines, please be aware that trip cancellation and interruption coverage may not be available now that a possible strike has been announced.  The following is a statement from Travel Guard on the Spirit Airlines strike.

Spirit Airlines pilots have announced a possible Strike set to go in effect June 12, 2010.  On May 12, 2010 the pilots stated they may go on strike June 12 if they don’t get a new contract with Spirit.

Insurance would have to have been purchased by 5/11/10 for coverage.

Coverage for Strike would be based on the plan purchased and that plan’s Description of Coverage.

“Strike” means a stoppage of work:

(1) announced, organized, and sanctioned by a labor union and

(2) which interferes with the normal departure and arrival of a Common Carrier.  This includes work slowdowns and sickouts.

The Insured’s Trip cancellation coverage must be effective prior to when the Strike is foreseeable. A Strike is foreseeable on the date labor union members vote to approve a Strike.
