U.S. Department of State Issues Travel Warning for Libya

Last Updated:

Following the attacks on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, the U.S. Department of State issued an updated travel warning for Libya urging U.S. citizens against all travel to the country. U.S. citizens should use extreme caution traveling to and from Libya, and should prepare their own contingency emergency plans, advises the Department of State.

Due to increased threats of violence since the initial attack, the U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist Americans in need is limited. In the event of an emergency, Americans may contact 091-220-5203 or 218-91-220-5203 if dialing from outside Libya.

The U.S. Department of State also encourages travelers to register through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which allows travelers to stay informed and connected during emergency situations. Enrolling in this program provides additional resources to travelers regarding travel updates and allows consular officers to better assist travelers in case of emergency.
