Volcanic Ash Delayed My Trip Beyond The Return Date, Am I Still Covered?

Travel insurance plans purchased before the volcanic eruption in Iceland can cover travelers impacted by the volcanic ash.  Depending on the policy, trip cancellation, trip interruption or travel delay benefits can be claimed.

For many travelers, the scheduled return date on the policy has already passed.  Coverage will be extended beyond the original return date, but only for a limited time, normally 7 days.  Check the policy’s certificate of insurance to see exactly how long coverage is available after the trip was scheduled to end.

Some benefits, such as travel delay, have set dollar limits.  When the maximum is reached, coverage is no longer available.

Squaremouth advises filing a claim, even if the policy extension period has passed.  Travel insurance carriers look at each claim on a case by case basis and evaluate each on merit.
