What is the Difference Between Travel Insurance and International Medical Insurance?

Published by December 1, 2009

There are primarily two categories of insurance offered on squaremouth.com, travel insurance and international medical insurance.

Travel insurance is designed to cover travelers on vacation, when there are deposits and other costs that can potentially be forfeited in the event of trip cancellation or trip interruption.  There is also  normally coverage for emergency medical & dental as well as medical evacuation & repatriation.  Most travel insurance plans include a comprehensive package of benefits such as travel delay, baggage delay, baggage & personal items loss and life insurance.

International medical insurance is more targeted for long term travel outside of the home country.  There is coverage for emergency medical & dental as well as medical evacuation & repatriation, but there is rarely coverage for trip cancellation or trip interruption to cover the trip costs.  Typically, international medical insurance is meant for travelers visiting family or friends abroad, traveling business people, students or volunteers.
